The Old House
(Continued
When the old woman came into the
kitchen for breakfast the next morn
ing she looked oddly changed. It was
the young gentleman who discovered
that she had forgotten to put on her
wig; but when little Leo put it on
her head she did not seem to notice.
Even the wig, however, did not re
move the haggardness of her expres
sion. It must have been due to the
dull yellow light which the foggy
morning cast through the window.
“Aren’t you feeling well, Mother?”
asked the young gentleman, in an ef
fort to lighten the atmosphere. But
he received no answer.
“Kuess die Hand, Madam Blum,”
he finally said feebly, and went off
shaking his head.
Thin little Rose, going out to do
the day’s marketing, told I^eo to go
in to his grondmother. Old Lady
Blum, hearing I^eo’s footsteps in the
room, said: “Go study your French—
you got a bad mark last time—“But
when she heard him rummaging
among his books she called to him
again: “Leo—we’re going to move
out of here and into a new house.”
Her voice was anxious and tortured.
“I’m awfully glad,” said Leo.
“You? You’re glad? You can be
glad. But I?”
Over the room fell a thick silence,
broken only by the hasty, frightened
ticking of the old clock.
“Leo,” the grandmother said at
last, “put the table beside the window
and the chair somewhere else, any
where you please. And go into the
kitchen. Go, I tell you!”
Frightened, I^eo tipped out. Every
thing was so peculiar to day. What
in the world did grandmother want?
from page 34)
Softly he went back to the door and
looked in. Old Lady Blum was feel
ing about the walls, bumping into the
misplaced furniture, losing her way,
mumbling to herself; there was some
thing terrible in the yellow old face.
“I can’t find my way, Leo—I can’t
find my way—I can’t find anything!
Come to me, Leo!”
The boy nestled against her and her
trembling hands stroked his hair and
his bony wrists. “Go study your
French,” she then said. “Stay here,
L eo —no, go ahead.” She held him
tight with one hand and pushed him
away with the other.
Then she rose clumsily and cauti
ously, more uncertainly than usual,
went through the kitchen to the hall
way. She had often gone alone as far
as the stairs; at the top step she
paused and drew a deep breath. “Yes,
God gives life; God gives death,” she
whispered. Then, grasping the slip
pery railing with frightened fingers,
she felt her way down the steps.
The thick, greenish onion odor told
her that she was crossing the sewer
grating; here was the large, uneven
paving stone that once gave little Leo
such a big bump; now she came to the
groove through which the gray rain
water used to run down. Then three
steps up, and the moist, stale air of
the bathhouse enveloped the old
woman. In one of the cabins water
dribbled—pin—ping—ping—into an
empty tin tub.
“God gives life; God gives death,”
said Old Lady Blum as she opened the
damp door leading to the stuffy pool.
“How much longer can it last—?”
An hour later they found her,
drowned in the shallow pool.

The Chosen People
(Continued from page 30)
against the new demands of a new
age? How is the complex “people”
to be defined? Can mere progression
of a faith suffice for election? That
would be irrational and immoral.
For a people the idea of election
is justified only within a temporal
limit. To sever it from its histori
cal content and, so to speak, project
it into eternity is iniquitous. The elec
tion of the individual, however, is
eternal and has its roots in eternity.

Jewish Life in Athens
(Continued from page 35)
women from the north and east are
enrolling at the school at Athens so
that an ever-increasing number of rep
resentatives of the different sections
of the country are becoming part and
parcel of the synagogue. Yet, the
members of the Athens congregation
glory in the opportunity to help them
preserve the spirit of good-will on
the campus, to make them happier
while they are students, to make their
years in Athens profitable Jewishly,
as well as academically, by making
them feel at home in the little syna
gogue off-the-campus. Thev are con
secrated to that task!
.4 New Year's Message
(Continued from page 22)
We must not be appalled at the
strain resulting from our endeavor to
meet all these obligations upon our
depleted wealth and incomes. Our
families must make these sacrifices
with us, each in his or her own imme
diate concerns. Every individual has
already felt the pinch to some ex
tent, but it behooves every son and
daughter of Israel to come to the
support of us all. Those who have
felt the effects of the world catas
trophe least must permit themselves
to feel it more, in order that those
who suffer most may be relieved and
encouraged to survive, not alone in
body, but in mind and spirit as well.
W ith this supreme effort by every
Jew, my sincere good wishes to all
my personal and official friends in
the fifth B’nai B’rith District, and
elsewhere, for a Happy New Year,
will be fulfilled many fold.
ARMAND WYLE.
