Announcement of the finest series
of concerts ever given in Atlanta, to
be presented at the Auditorium this
fall and winter, will be of especial
interest to the readers of The South
ern Israelite because of the fact that
Yehudi Menuhin and Vladimir Horo
witz are two of the artists on the
list. The boy violinist whose debut
several years ago fairly stood New
York critics on their heads and the
pianist who is recognized by those
critics as the logical successor to
Paderewski would alone make the
All Star Concert Series worthy of its
name. But besides there are Lawrence
Tibbett, Amelita Galli-Curci, La Ar
gentina and the Don Cossacks! Never
before has a series of six such impor
tant musical events been offered in a
southern city.
Dudley Glass and Marvin McDonald
are the venturesome Atlantans who
have contracted to bring these artists
to Atlanta. Mr. Glass has been asso-
cia t e d for
years with
musical affairs,
as writer, crit
ic and concert
manager. Mr.
McDonald has
been interest
ed for several
years in man
aging concerts
th r o u ghout
the South.
Their intimate
association
with the con-
cert artist
managers in
New Y o r k
made it possi
ble for them to
choose their
attractions to
especial ad
vantage.
‘‘Atlanta
never has fail
ed to give loyal
support to
really high
class attrac
tions,” said
Mr. Glass.
“The really outstanding artists have
always attracted large audiences. And
in this list there is not a single
‘second-rater’. We would accept none
but the best.”
The sale of seats for the season
of six concerts will open on Sep
tember 28 at the department store
of Davison-Paxon Company, on the
main floor. It will continue through
October 3, or one week. Reserva
tions will be received by mail or
telephone. Out-of-town patrons may
mail their reservations at any time
to Dudley Glass, Chamber of Com
merce Building, Atlanta.
An exceptionally low schedule of
seat prices is made possible by the
large capacity of the Auditorium.
Best seats for the season of six con
certs are offered at $9 each, with the
lowest priced seats at $4 each. For
single concerts the scale will range
from $2.50 to $1 per seat. •
The six attractions and their dates
are as follows:
November 11: The Don Cossacks,
Russian male chorus. They are 36
former officers of the Cfcar’s Imperial
Army, serving under General Wran-
gel, who were captured and interned
in Constantinople. While there they
formed the chorus which has since be
come famous around the world. Af
ter their first appearance in New
York last season they were engaged
for several more concerts, and the
critics declared that never before
had there been heard such marvellous
singing. They have given more than
2,000 concerts in Kurope. Literally
“men without a country,” they travel
on “en voyage’ passports issued by
the League of Nations, but they re
main exiles from their native Russia.
December 16; Lawrence Tibbett,
baritone star of the Metropolitan
Opera Company and of several fea
ture singing pictures. Mr. Tibbett has
several times been heard in grand
opera in Atlanta hut never in con
cert. He is considered the foremost
concert star
among the
men singers of
today, and
gives only a
few recitals a
year.
January 6:
Amelita Galli-
Curci, most
noted of all
the coloratura
soprano stars.
Formerly of
the Chicago
and Metropol-
itan Opera
companies, she
retired a few
seasons ago to
devote herself
wholly to the
concert field.
Not since the
days of Jenny
Lind has a
voice and per
sonality so
captured the
hearts of the
world. Wheth
er she trills the
soaring notes
of “Luccia” or whispers the tender
feeling of a concert air, she stirs her
audiences as few singers have done.
“When Galli-Curci sings, her soul
sings with her.” Her last season has
been her most successful, and few
cities in America will hear her this
winter, as her engagements take her
to South America and to Europe.
January 20: La Argentina, “the
spirit of the Spanish dance.” No
other dancer since Pavlowa in her
prime has created such a sensation.
But where Pavlowa expressed the
pure classicism of the Russian school,
La Argentina is the soul of Old
Spain—all fire and color and youth.
