the protection of the New York police, as
a result of threats made on his life.

the four women who were appointed by

I)R. RAPHAEL ISAACS, medical re
search scientist, is responsible, together
with Dr. Cyrus Sturgis for the perfection
of a new treatment for pernicious anemia,
according to an announcement by the Uni
versity of Michigan. The new remedy,
which involves intravenous injection of
concentrated liver extract, makes dieting
unnecessary and lessens the medical at
tention necessary.
I)R. LEON COHEN, noted surgeon and
personal physician of King Alexander, has
been appointed Professor of Clinical Med
icine at the University of Belgrade.
Cohen is the first Jew to occupy a chair
in a Jugoslavian university.
LOUIS STARK, of the Nete York
Times is placed on the honor roll com
piled annually by The Nation, because of
his series of articles exposing conditions
in the Harlan County coal mines. He is
one of three to be mentioned in the field
of journalism. Morris R- Cohen is listed
for the publication of his Ixmk “Reason
and Nature,” regarded as a milestone in
American thought.

RABBI TOBIAS GEFFEN, of Atlanta,
was recently installed as rabbi of Con
gregation Shearith Israel at the installa
tion services held at the synagogue of the
congregation. Mr. N. Rosenthal, of New
3 ork, presented the congregation with two
complete sets of the “Talmud-Balvy” and
1 almud-Y erushalmy" on the occasion of
the installation.
MRS. MAX ROSENBERG, of Colum
bus, Ga., was selected as the most valu
able citizen in Columbus in 1931 by the
Lions t lub of that city and was awarded
the cup presented annually by the club.
1 he award was based on Mrs. Rosen
berg's work in directing the free milk
station of the Jewish Ladies' Aid Society,
which supplied milk to undernourished
children.
SIDNEY PARKS, of Atlanta, won the
Southern Young Judaean Oratorical Con
test held at the Temple Sinai Sunday
School center in New Orleans recently.
His subject was "Progress and Judaism.”
Other speakers were Ida Cristol, of Chat
tanooga, and Harry Herman, of New Or
leans. Mr. Parks is treasurer of South
ern Young Judea, vice-president of the
Atlanta council, president of the Atlanta
chapter of A. Z. A., member of the
junior class at Emory University, and
treasurer of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity.
DOCTOR LOUIS C. ROUGLIN, prom
inent Atlanta specialist, has been elected
president of the Atlanta Ophthalmologiral
and Laryngological Society.
DR. H. CERF STRAUS, rabbi of Tem
ple Beth Israel of San Diego, Calif.,
has been appointed chaplain in the United
States Naval Reserve, and is the only
Jewish chaplain in the Navy Reserves on
the Pacific Coast. Dr. Straus was for
merly rabbi in Augusta, Ga.
HERMAN HEY’MAN, of Atlanta, was
admitted into the well-known law firm
of Howell, Heyman and Holding recently.
He graduated from the University of
Georgia with high scholastic honors, and
secured his law degree from Columbia
University. Mr. Heyman is a member of
the Atlanta Lawyers’ Club, the Atlanta,
Georgia and American Bar Association,
the B'nai B'rith, the Hebrew Benevolent
Congregation, director of the Federation
of Jewish Charities, belongs to Phi Epsi
lon Pi and Phi Beta Kappa fraternities
and is a Mason.
BARNEY' DREY’FUSS, President of the
Pittsburgh Baseball Club and last of the
old-time major league baseball magnates,
died of pneumonia following an op
eration at the age of 66. He was the first
Jew to occupy a dominant place in Ameri
can baseball. His recognized fairness to
players and his emphasis on clean sports
manship were responsible in a large meas
ure for maintaining the good repute of
the game.
JUDGE MICHAEL FEIN BERG will
receive the Republican nomination for
Illinois Attorney-General, according to an
understanding in political circles.
DR. MARION PHILLIPS, foremost
woman in the Labor Party and former
member of Parliament, died in Lmdon at
the age of 51. Born in Australia, where
>he obtained her education, Miss Phillips
went to England to study economics. She
joined the Fabian Society in 1905 and is
held chiefly responsible for organizing the
women workers of England for the Labor
Party’. She held various posts, both in
the Socialist Party and in the govern
ment.
