New York, N. Y.—Rabbi Jacob Tarsh-
ish, of Temple Israel, Columbus, has re
signed from his pulpit in order to devote
his entire time to commercial radio work,
according to a dispatch in Variety, theat
rical weekly. According to the story,
Rabbi Tarshish was doing Hollywood
chatter for Station WA1U and the I em-
ple Board felt that the broadcasts were
beneath the rabbi’s dignity. The rabbi
chose to affiliate himself with work on
the air, rather than devote himself ex
clusively to his congregation.
Warsaw. — I)r. Isaac Gruenbaum,
stormy petrel of Polish Zionism, and one
of the most colorful figures in European
Jewry, has decided to leave Warsaw and
to take up his residence in Paris, it was
stated at the concluding session of the an
nual convention of the Polish Zionist Fed
eration. I)r. Gruenbaum, who is a mem
ber of the Sein, has long been known as
a fearless champion of Jewish rights and
has often violently attacked the govern
ment. Personal reasons dictated his de
cision to leave Poland, he stated.
Berlin.—German anti-Semites are tram
pling on the spiritual heritage of a great
people, states Chancellor Bruening in a
book which has just appeared here. The
volume, a biography of Bruening by Dr.
Alfons Nobel, devotes a chapter to the
German Chancellor’s attitude towards the
Jewish problems in Germany, quoting him
as believing that Hitlerites and other anti-
Semites are persecuting the Jews for a
way of living which they have taken over
from the Germans.
Jerusalem.—The first graduation exer
cises held at the Hebrew University here,
featured the awarding of Masters’ De
grees to thirteen students, one of them a
girl. High Commissioner Wauchope at
tended the ceremonies and spoke, praising
the purpose for which the University was
founded. The oldest of the graduates is
40. The average age is 30.
Warsaw—A prediction that within a
few months a grave wave of Jewish im
migration would start from Poland to
Palestine is made by the newspaper Haint,
which calls upon the World Zionist Or
ganization to make the preparations neces
sary to help transport the immigrants and
to settle them in the land. The paper
asserts that thousands are ready for im
mediate sailing, if adequate funds are
available.
Warsaw.—A protest against the sepa
ration of Jews into special classes on spe
cial days in the Medical College of the
University of Vilna, has been submitted to
the Dean of the school by a delegation of
Jewish students. They protest against a
procedure which they feel creates a
“ghetto” in the school.
Jerusalem.—Kfar Yeladin, the chil
dren’s village, which has been maintained
for war orphans by South African Zion
ist since the end of the World War, will
no longer receive a subsidy from the
South African Zionist Federation, it is
stated. The decision to suspend main
tenance money for the most famous vil
lage in Palestine was due to the economic
crisis and to the fact that a majority of
the orphans have grown into maturity
and are now able to provide for them
selves. Those orphans still too young
to work will continue to be maintained
by South African Zionists.
Jerusalem.—Moses Novomeisky, noted
Jewish engineer and one of the heads of
the Dead Sea concession, is coming
to the United States to secure funds for
the building of a health resort in the
neighborhood of the Dead Sea, which is
said to have excellent medicinal proper
ties, according to a report here.
Jerusalem.—The Chief Rabbi of Pales
tine, has denied the request of friends of
the late Leopold J. Greenberg, editor of
the London Jewish Chronicle, to permit a
public funeral of Greenberg’s ashes prior
to burial in Palestine. Ignoring the state
ment that an exception ought to be made
in Greenberg’s case because of his ser
vices in Palestine, the Chief Rabbi em
phasized that it is against Jewish law
to cremate the dead.
Moscow.—Ori Larin, initiator of the
Jewish colonization movement in Russia,
and sponsor of the Soviet five-day week,
died here at the age of 50. One of the
outstanding figures in the Revolution,
Larin became of the major factors in
the economic and social changes intro
duced by the Soviets. • Larin, who was
born Michael Alexandrovitch Lurie, was
not only active in practical affairs but
wrote numerous volumes on theory and
polemics. After the Revolution of 1905
he organized the first trade union in
Russia. He helped influence the nation
alization of industries, the state monop
oly of foreign trade and the stimulation
of concessions to foreign enterprises.
London—It is a false impression that
has been created that Russia has solved
the economic problem for its Jews by
colonization and industrialization, ac
cording to Dr. A. Singalovsky, Ort leader.
He declared that there are a minimum
of 400,000 Jews who are without means
of subsistence. He admitted, however,
that Government regulations are now
much easier for the so-called declassed
Jews. He asserted that 250,000 Jews are
in the employ of the Soviet Government
in its various branches.
Washington, D. C.—Dr. Stephen S.
Wise, Nathan D. Perlman, Isidore Hersh-
field and Dr. S. Margoshes were among
the Jewish representatives who appeared
before the House Immigration Commit
tee to denounce pending measures fur
ther to restrict immigration. The most
eloquent plea was made by Dr. Wise, who
urged that some measures should be taken
to avoid the present conditions which
force the breaking up of families. He
characterized as “sadists” the men spon
soring bills for greater immigration cuts.
Istanbul, Turkey—The oldest Jewish
talmud torah in this part of the world, lo
cated at Smyrna, and believed to have
been established three hundreds years ago,
has been closed because of lack of funds!
New Britain, Conn.—R a b b i Jess
Schwartz has resigned his pulpit here ti
become Executive Director of the Cana
dian Zionist Federation, to succeed Rabb
J. L. Zlotnik, who recently resigned.
