One of the most inspiring of our Jew
ish holidays is the celebration of the
Feast of Pentecost, known in Hebrew as
“Shabuoth”—the Feast of Weeks, which
occurs this year on Friday, June 10th.
According to the Bible, this festival is
to be observed one day. Throughout Jew
ish history the Feast of Weeks has as
sumed a dominant place in Jewish life,
It commemorates the event on Mount
Sinai, when the children of Israel re
ceived the Ten Commandments—an event
which caused the Jewish people to be
come a spiritualizing force throughout
the generations.
It is on this holiday that hundreds of
young Jewish boys and girls pledge them
selves to continue in the paths of the prin
ciples which Moses gave tit the Children
of Israel on Mount Sinai. It is on this
holiday when proud parents behold their
sons and daughters enter into young man
hood and womanhood, promising to up
hold the ideals of Judaism, a beatific and
solemn expression on the faces of each
fresh, young soul. It is a graduation,
a glad, yet sombre event. On this day
the confirmants leave the Sunday School
rooms behind them, unless they continue
on in the field of religion. But the doors
are not closed to them, and neither will
the doors of their minds be closed to
the truth of the glory of their religion.
To each member of a confirmation
class, be it in a hired hall in a small
town or in the lovely serenity of a city
temple, a symbol of trust is meted out,
as each accepts the traditions that date
back to the scene on Mount Sinai. The
trust is that these principles may never
be forgotten, may never die in its own
laxity and negligence, but that all tradi
tions of the faith may be followed out
and respected.
May the importance of confirmation,
its full meaning and application never be
lost in the whirl of a busy Anglicized
May the history of the holiday be a con
stant reminder of the spiritual strength
of the Jews, of their galvanizing force
throughout the ages.
As in ancient times, when the Jewish
people lived in Palestine and were tillers
of the soil, the Feast of Pentecost was
celebrated as a nature festival, so must
there be praises to Him who gives us
the beauty of nature in its glorious
springtime. With the change of environ
ment and circumstances, since the agricul
tural background lost its meaning after
the destruction of the Temple, a new
concept has developed. Although, with
the stalwart work of the Chalutzim in
Palestine today, there may yet be a
Feast of Pentecost, when, on the last day
of the harvest season, a pilgrimage will
be made to Jerusalem and an offering
of the first fruits of the wheat harvest
made with thanks and praises to God.
Perhaps the only trace we have of the
agricultural background of the festival
of old is retained through the custom of
decorating the house of worship with
green branches and flowers, and the read
ing from the Book of Ruth; while in the
home, dairy foods are served, symboliz
ing Israel’s joy in the Torah which is
composed to “milk and honey.”
Shabuoth is still celebrated as the an
niversary of the endowment of a noble
message to the world, wh
cal bondage as well as
bondage were cast away i
he gave the children of I
Commandments. It i s p
spiritual freedom that the f
strives to convey to us t<
message that is imparted
and maidens that they mi
banner onwards towards
hope of all Israel.
