Council of Jewish Women
The annual meeting of the Council of
Jewish Women was held May 16th at
the Hint) Museum of Art, when the elec
tion of officers for the forthcoming year
uas held. Mrs. Maurice Jacobus, chair
man of the nominating committee, pre-
sented the following slate, which was ac-
cepted unanimously. Officers for 1932-33
are: Mrs. Armand Wyle, president; Mrs.
Leonard Haas, first vice-president; Mrs.
Iamis Elsas, second vice-president; Mrs.
Baron Asher, recording secretary; Mrs.
Clarence Wenar, corresponding secretary;
Mrs. Louis Regenstein, first assistant cor
responding secretary; Mrs. Julius Simon,

Hirsch. Nace R. Cohen gave the opening
and closing prayers. Simon Wender led
the responsive readings. Three open cul
tural meetings have been held recently.
A round table discussion was participated
in by the members of the Hebrew Uni
versity on Mt. Scopus and the history and
condition of the Jews in China, with
Alephs Ed Gravren, Joe Blass, Nace
Cohen and Simon Wender leading the
discussion. Mr. A. H. Germain gave an
interesting talk on Palestine, and Mr.
Mose Harvey, instructor of History at
Emory University, spoke on George
Washington’s life for the Washington
Day celebration. A discussion of the in
fluence and significance of Hitler and his
movement will be discussed in the near
future. The committee in charge of these
events included Simon Wender, chairman;
Nathan Yagol and Edward Vajda.
Ceremonies were held at the Congre
gation Shearith Israel with installation j
of the new officers by Rabbi Tobias Gef-
fen. The new officers are: R. Sicro, presi
dent; S. H. Kulbersh, vice-president; J.
Rothenberg, treasurer. 'The outgoing
president, Sidney Zimmerman, has held
office for the last four years, and during
his term the synagogue on Washington
Street was constructed.
Rabbi Jacob N. Kaplan, of 'Temple
Israel, Miami, Fla,, and professor of
philosophy at the University of Miami,
was guest speaker at Friday evening
services at the Temple recently. Rabbi
Kaplan’s topic was “The Place Where
East and West Meet.”

'The tenth annual meeting of the South
Carolina Federation of Temple Sister
hoods was held recently in Columbia.
'The total registration for the meeting j
was 123, consisting of delegates from the j
following Sisterhoods: Anderson, Bishcp-
ville, Camden, Charleston, Columbia,
Dillon, Darlington, Florence, Greenville,
Greenwood, Spartanburg and Sumter.
Rabbi Jacob Raisin, of Charleston, gave j
the invocation at the morning session,
which was followed by reports by state

A luncheon was held for the delegate*
featuring addresses by Dr. Josiah Morse,
Professor of Philosophy at the University
of South Carolina; Dr. Samuel Schill-
man, of Sumter; Dr. Isadore Schayer,
and Mr. Julian Hennig. The award of
the cup for achievement went to Colum
bia and Sumter, both sections tieing for
the honor. The next annual state con
vention will be held in Camden.
