AMERICAN ZIONISM
(Continued from page 5)
Y. M. H. A. could improve upon. There
is not a single other activity that the
Organization sponsors. And people are
not going to continue to pay six dollars
and receive nothing in exchange.
Rut American Zionism suffers from
spiritual atrophy even more than from
economic stringency. No one pretends
that the Zionist Organization of America
affects the Jewish educational life of
America. It has no influence in the major
Jewish organization. It does nothing to
foster the growth of the Hebrew lan
guage. It is unable to stimulate any
form of substantial Jewish immigration—
either of men or money—from the United
States to Palestine. It exercises no in
tellectual or spiritual leadership of any
kind anywhere. It is, in fact, nothing
but a trade name.
There is a widespread feeling that the
Zionist Organization of America hinders
rather than facilitates the development
of interest in Palestine among American
Jews. Accomplishing nothing on its own
initiative, it bars the way for other
institutions to serve in the same channel.
Moreover, it offers nothing in the form
of a program of Jewish life that can
stabilize a bewildered and panicky Amer
ican Jewry. The claim is frequently made
that the Zionist Organization of America
serves one great purpose in that it is a
collection agency for the national funds
which maintain certain activities in Pal
estine. The fact is, however, that the
7,000 members of the Zionist Organiza
tion probably provide far less than ten
per cent of the funds that are raised
by the Jewish Agency in this country.
Of these 7,000 members, probably less
than half are contributors to the Jewish
Agency drives.
The Zionist Organization of America
is a sterile institution todav because it
has failed to win to itself the youth and
the intellectual middle class. While Jew
ish life has been undergoing revolution
ary transformations, the Zionist Organi
zation has been traveling in a rut, fol
lowing the methods of thirty years ago,
sponsoring the ideas of pre-war origin,
unaware that the great stream of Jewish
life has long ago passed it bv and left
it stranded.
Some sav that the Zionist movement
as embodied within the particular Or
ganization is doomed. Others contend
that pure Zionism is no longer the at
tractive intellectual doctrine that it once
was. Radicalism has invaded the Jewish
ranks, a radicalism that has been born of
despair and disillusion, a radicalism that
sees the only hope in internationalism, a
radicalism that contends that the Jew
ish problem cannot be solved by putting
even a million Jews into Palestine.
When the Zionist delegates met at
Philadelphia, they talked excitedly of
lowering the dues of their Organization.
They became heated as to the leader
ship. They delivered themselves of
Pollyanna talks on possibilities of in
vestment in Palestine, in complete disre
gard of the economic ruins here. But
only one thing can prevent the singing
of the swan song of American Zionism;
intelligent action to make the Zionist Or
ganization a genuine factor in Jewish
life by adopting a new program and a
new attitude.
