THE REALITY OF HITLERISM
(Continued from page %)
the head of the corporate German Mate
as they have done in the case of Musso-
lini. They are always ready to defend
civilization, that is to say, their civiliza
tion—and what a civilization it is!
It will be interesting to watch the com
promises to which those “staunch liberals”
will consent in days to come. Starting out
with their bowing before Hitler’s acces
sion, which, so they say, was perfectly
legal and therefore wholly beyond the
range of their criticism, we may well ask
them why they bothered at all to pro
test against anti-Jewish excesses? If Hit
ler represents the will of the German peo
ple, it is by the will and with the consent
of the German people that the Jews are
passing through the inferno of Naziism.
Who arc they, democrats that they call
themselves, to oppose the will of a sover
eign nation, or to meddle in a sovereign
nation’s internal affairs? If it is in the
name of humanity they were protesting,
why limit themselves to Jews? Why then
not a word in defense of the tens of thou
sands of pacifists, internationalists, Marx
ists and Communists who are being tor
tured and massacred, castrated and mu
tilated by those fiends with long knives?
Are they not human beings? Would it
not be more frank and more honest, more
consistently democratic, to have repudiated
the whole ideology of Fascism, which
carries in its bosom the germs of xeno
phobia, or racial hatred, and of ruthless
class discrimination?
Why defend a system which rests upon
a lie? Or is it not furnishing Fascism
with a moral license when you say that
you have no quarrel with the for 0 f ^ |

The protests haven’t stopped the J t '»,

trous than an open show of hostility.
Jewish liberals will not prevent the G«.
man Jewish masses from being throm
into the war that is coming against tkrir
Jewish brothers of the Soviet Union. F«
this must not be forgotten: After trying»lj
his tricks, after exhausting all his stunts
to divert attention from his failure
inability to remedy the economic situate
of Germany, Hitler will try as a last at*
supreme effort to gain Germany new mar
kets and lead the country back to pr<*.
perity by an attack on the Soviet ('krais*
and on Soviet White Russia. We have
Edouard Herriot’s word for it in the Par
sian weekly periodical “Marianne,” that
twice already Hitler, through Von Papet
has proposed a joint Franco-Germatuc
military intervention against the U.S.S.l
We know that Herriot has refused ts
play the game of Prussian Junkerism aa4
Hitlerite Naziism against the peoples «t
the New Russia, but we also know that
Hitler seeks new allies and that he wil
find what he seeks.
No. Protesting in that half-heartti
ineffective manner as was done at Madi
son Square Garden will not suffice. Not
ing less will do than to bar the road t
Fascism and frustrate its criminal de
signs. With a system that cynically rie
vates Jew-baiting to a political creed, i
system that tortures and massacres, a »y»-
tern that muzzles the people’s voice, that
wars on the spirit, that suppresses re
search, that hounds intellectuals, that -
eager to let the guns do the talking—wit*,
such a system there is no use arguing an:
pleas for decency are futile. 1 he onh
thing to do is to stand together, Jew and
non-Jew alike, and beat it down before '
conquers Europe and the world.

The belief in miracles, too, has hard!'
