REACTION TO THE NAZI
MENACE
(Continued from page 29)
They are against war. They dislike mili
tarism. They are against a system in
which a secret police can arrest and hold
any one without trial. They are for free
education. They are for that half of the
German people which voted against Hit
ler. In all this they are at one with the
vast majority of the American people and
with the best traditions of this country.
It was the Jewish masses who demon
strated for all of us, partly because Hit
ler attacked the Jews directly, but also
because they have more closely in their
own background the memory of what it
is to live vlnder tyranny.
The Jewish upper classes are essentially
too conservative to realize that anti-
Semitism is a symptom of social reaction
and, therefore, temperamentally cannot
fight it. The professional Jewish leaders
cannot fight it because they are forced to
trade on race-consciousness, meeting pride
with pride. The Jewish masses sense
that the only way to fight anti-Semitism
is to fight for social progress all along
the line. For the only answer to anti-
Semitism is social freedom, which points
to the assimilation of the Jews. Jews
are not a racial group hut a sociological
phenomenon, perpetuated by persecution
and intolerance. The modern Jewish
“question” is the ghost of reactionary
forces. Under the light of social justice it
dissolves.

IN THE NEWS
(Continued from page 28)
Welfare Council, and the Rev. James
Meyers, of the Federal Council of
Churches of Christ, declared, in part,
that:
“The National Industrial Recovery Act
commands our special interest because of
its ethical and human significance, and
because it has incorporated into law some
of the social ideals and principles for
which our religious organizations have
stood for many years. How far the act
can accomplish the desired results re
mains to he seen, but many of its pro
visions, particularly those relating to the
rights of labor, are so forward-looking
in their intent as to merit the heartiest
cooperation of all in realizing the maxi
mum social justice and economic cooper
ation made under its provisions.”
