THE REBIRTH OF THE
LUFTMENSCH
(Continued from page 10)
came to found a new collectivity, a real
brotherhood where no man is lord over
another man or exploit him. There are
no hostile Arabs in Biro-Bidjan, no
Christian Democratic Leaguers, no Awak
ening Maguars, no Cuzas, no Hitlers,
no Grand Muftis, no numerous clausus,
no boycott, no religious prejudice, no
High Commissioners of His Britannic
Majesty, no Passfields to pass limitations
on the extent of building and no
Churchills to cut off figurative Transjor-
dans. There are no signs: "Only Chris
tians!” in Biro-Bidjan. Biro-Bidjan wants
Jews, asks for Jews, welcomes Jews.
Yes, and I will tell you something else.
There »» a possibility that an invitation
will be extended to the Jews of Poland
to come out to Biro-Bidjan. Negotiations
are in progress. They have advanced a
long way. I have known this for a long
time, but I had always been skeptical
about such a plan. I hesitated to speak
or write about it. But after having seen
what I have seen in the U. S. S. R-, I
know now that if the Soviet Government
finally consents and sets itself to carry the
plan into action, the thing will be done.
On my way through Poland I learned
that the Polish Government does not re
gard the project with favor. But the eyes
of the destitute and doomed Jewish in
habitants of Katowitz and Lodz and
Warsaw lit up with a strange light of
expectancy at the mention of the idea.
To them it seemed in fact almost too
good to be true.
