\lews Flashes About Germany
\'t York.—There is a widespread
belief in certain Nazi circles in Berlin
hat t ere will be a Nazi party, contest*
[ nk - t presidential election of 1936, in
he l sited States, Edgar Ansel Mowrer,
[ Berlin correspondent of the Chi
cago Daily News, who incurred the en-
! n itv f the Hitler government because
he iti'i-tcd on telling the truth, declared
, n an interview with the Seven Arts
Featurt* Syndicate. Mr. Mowrer said that
\azi leaders abroad believe that Ger
man-.\mericans here should be induced to
help rganize such a party. The Ameri
can ••rite department is in possession of a
ma" "f evidence relating to this plan and
^ther Nazi activities in the United States,
Mr. Mowrer believes. He expressed the
belief that while the anti-German boy-
c tt uould embarrass the Nazi regime
:t would not result in its overthrow so
>ng as the Hitlerites held the Germans
:n the grip of a passionate and almost
religious frenzy. “The great task of
Americans,’ he said, “is to prevent any
thing like Nazi-ism from spreading here.”
Me pointed out that while he had found
•nme pro-Nazi sentiment here already he
elieved that the bulk of Gennan-Ameri-
rans in Chicago and in New York were
pposed to Hitlerism. Mr. Mowrer said
that the Jews of Germany were doomed
unle-s there was a major change there
which he does not foresee. He charged
I’rf'iilcnt von Hindenburg with being
partially responsible for the government's
anti-Semitic policy because of his pas
sive silence ,and declared the real source
of the anti-Jewish prejudice is Hitler
himself. Seventy-five per cent of the
anti-Semitism in Germany would disap
pear at once if some 50 of the chief Nazi
leaders were overthrown, Mr. Mowrer
remarked.
Merlin.—The new German penal code,
now in the process of being adjusted to
the Nazi philosophy, will make it a
crime for a German to be married to a
per-om of "alien race,” that is a Jew, ac
cording to a forecast of the code out
lined—by Hans Karl, Prussian minister
'f justice before the Nazi Lawyers’ Con-
ere»v Under the new criminal law both
parties to such a marriage would be pun
ishable while the union itself would be
iedared null and void. Karl indicated
that the Nazi regime is determined to
•iigmatize such marriages as race of-
fenses. I n the new statute the terms
'Aryan” and “non-Aryan” will be dis
carded as too vague and indefinite and
r replaced by “members of alien consan
guinities.' - High treason, which the code
Jctine> as any attempt to overthrow the
present regime, will be punishable by
icath Simultaneously Karl announced
,riat all Nazi officials seeking to obtain
rnar r age licenses must present documen-
ra r\ proof that their intended wives are
of Aryan descent. The same order ap
plies to members of the voluntary labor
service. The Prussian minister of edu
cation has also decreed that the schools
must devote three hours a week to the
study of "eugenic science” in the inter
ests of improving the race.
Berlin.—The suicide epidemic among
German Jews has claimed three more
notable victims, Werner and Martin
Sherer, prominent theatrical impresarios
and I)r. I.andsberg, a veteran Zionist and
Hebrew scholar. The report of the lat
ter s suicide was made public by the Nazi
police but it is believed that he was
murdered since the announcement of his
death came after he had been arrested
as a “Communist” and held in police
headquarters incommunicado for several
days.
Geneva.—In a sensational interview
with the correspondent of the Jewish
Morning Journal, Dr. Joseph Goebbels,
Nazi minister of propaganda, admitted
that the problem of the German Jews
was an international question. In the
course of a series of questions put to
him by the Jewish correspondent, Goeb
bels asked whether the Jews would be
ready to regard the problem of the Jews
in Germany from a minority standpoint.
When the correspondent said he wanted
Goebbels opinion, the Nazi leader de
clared that the Jews themselves are di
vided on this matter and its thereby diffi
cult to determine whether they will be
regarded as a national minority and
pointed out that the Jewish representa
tives must therefore present a solution
for the Jewish problem themselves be
cause it is an international question.
T*his interview, the first granted to a
Jewish newspaperman, came after Goeb
bels had made a lengthy statement to the
entire group of correspondents covering
the League meetings. In this statement
he defended National Socialism as "a
higher form of democracy” and asserted
that Germany had solved the problem
raised by “the excessive influence of Jews
on its public life in the most humane
way.” Conceding that there had been iso
lated excesses by uncontrollable elements,
he denied that the Jews had been treated
as an inferior race. "It must be remem
bered,” he said, "the Jews of Germany
were exercising at that time a decisive
influence on the whole intellectual life
. . . that they made public opinion, ex
ercised a decisive influence on the Stock
Exchange and were the rulers of parlia
ment and its parties. What we do not
understand is that while there were pro
tests against Germany’s defensive ac
tion in this field, there was, on the other
hand, no willingness to absorb the excess
Jewish population emigrating from Ger
many."
