WHAT IS A JEW?
(Continued from page 6)
second coming of Jesus.” The integrity
of the Bible as a fortress which may pro
tect us from skeptical and cynical views
is certainly established so far as the fun
damentalist is concerned.
"If we but read the Bible carefully, we
find in it the solution to all our problems
and the explanation of all our questions.
In it are found predictions which estab
lish definitely the authority and unity of
the Bible. To whom but the Jew could
scripture have referred when it said,
‘And thou shalt become an astonishment,
a proverb, and a byword among all the
peoples whither the Lord shall lead thee
away’? (Dt. 28:37, also Jer. 24:9 and
Ezek. 5:14, 15). Is it not striking that the
words byword in Dt. 28:37 and taunt in
Jer. 24:9 are both a translation of the
same Hebrew word Sheninaht Does not
this impressively accurate prophecy prove
that the Jew would l>e called sherni—
merely as a taunt and a byword?"
'I*he use of scriptures is truly a remark
able thing. The fundamentalist, thinking
that all Jews are Zionists, proudly quotes
scriptures to prove Zionism.
"God inspired Theodore llerzl to found
the Zionist Movement exactly twenty
years before the Balfour Declaration so
that the nations of the world might be
prepared for it. At any other time the
movement would have failed but Israel
is God’s timepiece and so, as Ezekiel
(36:24) prophesies: ‘I will take you from
among the nations and gather you out
of all countries and will bring you into
your own land’ or to quote Jeremiah
(30:3), ‘and I will cause them to return
to the land that I gave to their fathers
and they shall possess it.’ ”
The feeling that the Jew as a business
man is a cruel and heartless profiteer still
persists and crops out every once in a
while in conversation. The general feeling
toward the Jew is far from friendly. The
following incident, quite typical, illus
trates the point. A woman and her six-
year-old daughter were attracted by the
appearance of the scrolls. The little girl
pointed to the scrolls and asked, "What
are these, Mother?” The mother did not
know. Thereupon, I volunteered and
told them about the scrolls and the ex
hibit in general. As they left I over
heard the girl say to her mother, "Gee,
Mother, I didn’t know Jews could be as
nice as that!" There were, of course, the
condescending gentiles who informed me
that “some of their best friends are J fv ,,

husband has a Jewish partner in b^,

One of the most staggering rractionj

it is extremely difficult to explain thJ

People observing the pointer for the scrnill
often asked: "What is that dagger?" One
young lady came over to me and asked
me very confidentially in a manner that
indicated she realized that the truth
hurts: "Do you really sacrifice Christian
children before the Passover?” When Ij
uttered a strong denial, she merely »*id.
"Well, doesn’t your Bible say that
must sacrifice children?"
Those who asked questions about an;

of the others. 'ITiere are thousand'
