iner ambassador to Germany, urged the
Jews to continue the boycott and said
if it is made strong and vigorous the
Nazis “will yield and some proposal will
come from the other side” to save Ger
man Jewry. Other speakers warned Jews
to be on guard against yarmelkahs and
Chanukah candles made in Germany.
Budapest—The Hungarian minister of
education has publicly announced that
he is powerless to prevent the recurring
anti-Semitic outbreaks in the universities
so long as Premier Gomboes lends the
anti-Semites encouragement by spending
many hours in conferring with their lead
ers. The growing opposition to Goem-
boes, which includes Jews, liberals, demo
crats and monarchists, is believed likely
to cost him his position.
New York—“Judas Maccabeus has set
an example of courage and fortitude
which should contain an inspiration to us
all,” President Roosevelt declared in a
telegram to the fourth annual Maccabean
Festival held in Madison Square Garden
under the auspices of the New York Zion
ist Region. Twenty thousand people ap
plauded the President’s message which
regretted his inability to be present and
conveyed his “appreciation of the signal
part taken by the Jewish people in up
holding the traditions and aims of our
country."
Samuel Untermyer, the principal
speaker, pleaded for a revival of the
Maccabean spirit and bitterly attacked Dr.
Hans Luther, German ambassador, whose
recall he demanded. Other speakers were
Morris Margulies, director; G. A. Low-
enstein, chairman; Morris Rothenberg,
Louis I.ipsky and Carl Sherman.
The feature of the festival was a pre
sentation of a stirring dramatic and mu
sical spectacle entitled "Reunion in Tel
Aviv" portraying modern Jewish life in
Palestine. “Reunion in 'I'el Aviv,” pro
duced with a cast of S00 and a large
symphony orchestra, was directed by
Isaac Van Grove, who staged "The Ro
mance of a People;” I.asar Galpern, in
ternationally renowned ballet master;
Emil Hilb, noted conductor; Eugene
Fuerst, R. Ben Ari, and Miss Lillian
Shapiro. A message was also received
from Professor Albert Einstein.
New York—The London Jewish Chron
icle has been banned throughout Ger
many “on account of its general tendency,”
according to word received at its New
York office. The Chronicle has received
wide praise for its comprehensive cover
age of the German-Jewish situation.
Rome—A complete denial that the Pope
is negotiating with the Hitler regime re
garding the treatment and status of Cath
olics of Jewish origin in Germany was is
sued here by the Vatican. The Papal sec
retary pointed out that the Vatican could
intervene in behalf of such Catholics only
if they were being discriminated against
because of their religion or if Catholic
priests of Jewish blood were being pre
vented from carrying out their clerical
duties. The Vatican explained that it
knows of only two such cases, which are
not enough to make an issue. A similar
denial was made regarding negotiations
over the German government’s rumored
plan to eliminate the Old Testament from
the school curriculum.
Berlin—Despite the announcement by
Hans von Tschammer-Osten, Reich sports
commissar, that Jewish athletes are not
being discriminated against except in that
they are barred from holding official
positions in sports associations, German-
