A GREAT HUMORIST INTER
VIEWS HIMSELF
(Continued from page 7)
Columbus discovered America. My mother
was a telephone operator and my father
was a train announcer, so I haven't
stopped talking since. I uttered my first
words at the age of six months. I
screamed ‘Why did I go in the stock
market?’ I always feel like a true South
erner, even though I was born on the
East Side of New York City. The room
in which I first saw light had southern
exposure. My parents came from the
south of Russia. I have been a southpaw
since I was a child, and the first actor I
remember seeing on the stage was E. H.
Sothern.
“At the age of twelve I went on the
stage. 'ITiey would not allow me in pool-
rooms, and I had to have some place to
spend my evenings. I started as an ama
teur. Some people say I haven’t changed
yet. I worked for Ziegfield, was sold
down the river to the Shuberts and came
back to Ziegfield. Water, you know, al
ways finds its own level. I married nine
teen years ago, and am still stuck with
the same wife and five daughters.
“Even when I was a kid I could write
with chalk on sidewalks and buildings.
Years later this practice brought me roy
alties from book publishers and maga
zines. I left grammar school by request.
Twenty-five years later my autobiography,
‘My I.ife Is in Your Hands,' sold over
150,000 copies. Suppose 1 had had an
education ?”
“What is vour ambition in life, Mr.
Cantor?" I asked.
“I realized it several years ago," he
replied, “and ever since it has been diffi
cult for me to get used to speaking to my
wife’s relatives. I met the Prince of
Wales."
One more question and I was through.
“Mr. Cantor," I asked, “having con
quered the stage, motion pictures, radio
and the literary world, what is your goal
now ?"
He rose from his chair, placed a gentle
hand on my shoulder, maneuvered me
over to the door and said: “I would like
to be able to learn how to put tooth paste
back in the tube.”
Then he pushed me out the door!

THAT JEW ISH DIFFERENCE
(Continued from page 10)
is simply insufferable. After all, we Gen
tiles are human, and it is not surprising
if we resent this outrageous sort of treat
ment and rebel against it in terms of
persecution.
But I would not be flippant or even
ironical in a discussion of a problem
which at bottom is so terrible with agony.
What I would emphasize is the truth in-
solved—the basic truth, that persecution
at bottom is invariably the product of
a haunting and terrifying sense of in
feriority which springs from the fact of
difference. Even if the group which is
different from ourselves is not superior,
we are afraid that it may be. The mere
fact of difference, especially, if persis
tently and proudly maintained, seems to be
a reflection upon our own character and
attainments, and thus the inferiority com
plex, whether it has any basis in reality
or not, is begun. What we have here is
simply an extreme attempt to keep people
in their place. The persecutor, says Lewis
Browne, in his book “Stranger than Fic
tion," is trying to convince “his own
wretched self that the person flaunting
his difference must be far, far inferior."
We persecute “different" people, in other
words, in order that we may prove them
to be inferior and ourselves superior.
