kind of success, its Philistine lack of a
subtle shame in its attitude, indeed its
brazen pride in it, if you take these things
into consideration docs not your heart con
tract with apprehension at the thought of
going to meet an era of economic un
settledness in such an atmosphere.
Pessimism? Surely, but I am willing to
stand discredited in years to come as a
morbid maniac. Gladly. If only my
humiliation takes the place of your sor
row !
Yes, there is a new storm gathering on
the horizon; a whirlwind. And it must
blow itself out. Is there a place of refuge
where the Jewish people may await its
passage in security? Will they survive?
And how will they survive? Alfred
Docblin suggested Jewish self-defense
units the other day in Paris—fighting the
barbarians with their own weapons. I)r.
Wise calls for a world congress—most
necessary international deliberation. The
Zionists rightly point to Eretz Israel as a
haven of refuge—a partial solution.
Others call for Jewish enclaves in the
midst of the Gentiles, enclaves with mi
nority rights—nice ghettos. The Com
munists assure us that salvation lies in
the establishment of a classless society.
Yes, but in the meantime, in the transi
tion period that leads to the new social
order of tomorrow, where must we stand,
where go? Wohin?
Conformity is not the answer. Segrega
tion is not the answer. The one injures
the human dignity of the Jew, the second
injures civilization.
In the face of the blatant nationalism
whose only achievements are feats of
arms and whose ultimate object, as Von
Papen cynically avowed, is death on the
battle field, let there arise a new Jewish
nationalism. Not an imitative nationalism
with Jewish he-men and khaki shirts and
club-toters. No, let the Jew speak out his
personal and his social conscience. Not
cringingly, not hesitatingly, but proudly in
the spirit of that Tarsiot Jew who spoke
of putting on the whole armature of God.
This is the tragedy of our time that we
see only conflict where there should be
enrichment of both elements through the
conflict. That beneficent interchange of
values must be made a reality, of which
Fichte saw something and of which
Bakunin spoke when he wrote the pro
phetic words about an association, where
in the free evolution of the one is the con
dition of the free unfoldmcnt of the other.
We non-Jews cannot be free ourselves if
the freedom of the Jews, their unhamp
ered unfoldmcnt according to their own
racial character and the free expression
of their social conscience is not guar
anteed. Self-expression, self-organization,
complete self-determination is the demand
of the future. A community should be a
community of self-determined personali
ties, if it is not to be a chaingang. As
a people with a character of its own
which means a message of its own, let the
Jews therefore speak out without fear.
What is it you want? What is your
vision of the world? I do not say that
the non-Jcwish world will accept vour
conception of humanity and the universe,
but you will have saved our souls alive
by re-stating the message that was con
fided to you in the beginning of time and
that you have made constantly richer in
the four thousand years of your historical
experience. And if then you still must
be persecuted, if you still must be hounded
and spat upon, you will know that you
are not alone, but that you suffer for an
idea that is undeniably and irresistibly
conquering the world, conquering in spite
of the dark clouds, in spite of the clatter
of arms, in spite of the bellowing in the
market-place, in spite of the brute nation
alisms and their neanderthalian antics.

Jewish athletes, organized in the Zionist
Maccabee League and the Sport League
of the Jewish War Veterans Union, are
making independent efforts to prepare
themselves for the 1936 Olympic games.
They have rented their own training
fields wherever possible but these are
hardly suited to produce athletes that
could pass the stiff Olympic requirements.
All of the existing sports grounds, stad
iums and halls, most of which are sup
ported by taxes, still bar Jews under
orders of the ministry of interior. Never
theless there are scattered signs that some
sports clubs are clandestinely reinstating
Jewish athletes in order to bolster their
athletic standing.
Dublin—The tax on matzoth has been
repealed by the Irish Free State. The tax
was very small but it worked a hardship
on the poor Jews of Ireland. Irish Jewry
uses 600,000 pounds of matzoth for Pass-
over, all of which is imported. The re
peal of the tax followed the intervention
of Jewish leaders with the De Valera
government which had not known that
the tax interfered with the observance of
Passover on the part of Jews who could
not afford to pay the matzoth tax.
Warsaw—Seventy members of the anti-
Semitic National Democratit, most of
them students, have been arrested here
for carrying on a campaign of propa
ganda among Christians to boycott Jew
ish shops during the Christmas season.
Those arrested had been waging an in
tensive drive by word of mouth and had
also been picketing Jewish stores and pre
venting shoppers from entering.
Jerusalem—It is impossible for Jews
to expect security in Transjordania so
long as they are insecure in Palestine,
Emir Abdullah, of Transjordania, de
clared in his second interview in a week
on the Jewish question. Pointing out that
Palestine and his country see eye to eye
so far as the Jews are concerned, the
Emir asserted that all opportunities for
Jews in Transjordania will be available
only after they have reached a satisfac
tory understanding with t he Palestine
Arabs.
