JEWISHLINE
Charge That the Big Shipping
‘ companies are Engaged in a
Campaign of ‘‘Libel”
Tel Aviv (WNS—Palcor Agen-
A charge that the big ship-
p ’ ng companies are engaged in a
campaign of “libel” in order to
r ke it appear that the company
operating the “Tel Aviv,” first
Jewish stemship, is under Hitler
auspices and is not Jewish, was
made here by Felix Rosenblueth,
prominent Jewish exile from Ger
many, and member of the Board
0 [ Directors of the Palestine Ship
ping Company, which operates the
Tel Aviv." Informed that Amer
ican newspapers had published
reports from Italy that the first
Jewish steamer in history was
merely a subterfuge on the part
of German shipping interests try
ing to obtain some of the lucra
tive business to Palestine, Mr.
Rosenblueth declared that “such
an allegation that the ‘Tel Aviv’
is German and not Jewish is en
tirely unfounded. The whole cap
ital of the Tel Aviv’, amounting
to i'85.000. has been provided by
German Jews.”
Mr. Rosenblueth, who is now
practicing law in Palestine, added:
The Palestine Shipping Com
pany and the steamer, ‘Tel Aviv,’
are both registered in Palestine.
The ship is flying the Palestinian
flag. The campaign of libel against
the company which, its sponsors
hope, will result in a Jewish boy
cott, is prompted by a most un
fair competition on the part of
interested shipping companies. I
trust that Jewish leaders in Amer
ica will use their influence in or
der to protect this young Jewish
shipping undertaking.”
How valuable the Palestine
shipping trade has become is
shown by the fact that in 1934,
a otal of 2,520 ships entered its
harbors, with a gross tonnage of
3928,000. In 1931, the number of
ships was 806, and the tonnage,
* 810.000. The “Tel Aviv” is a 10,-
000-ton steamer.

Journalism comes into being it will
be the second school of journalism
founded with funds left by a Jew
ish publisher, the first having been
the Pulitzer School of Journalism
at Columbia University, which was
created by funds left by the late
Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the
New York World.

Party In Czechoslovakia
In Election Bloc With
Socialists
Prague (WNS)—By a vote of
thirty to nine the council of the
Jewish Party of Czechoslovakia vot
ed to create a joint electoral bloc
with the Socialist Party in the May
parliamentary elections in order to
overcome the effect of the revised
election law which requires that a
party must have polled at least
120,000 votes in order to elect a
representative to parliament. Since
the Jewish Party has never muster
ed more than 100,000 votes, it would
eliminate Jewish representatives
from parliament. The Socialist Par
ty agreed to nominate on their tick
et Dr. Angelo Goldstein, and H.
Kugel. As a result of the council’s
decision, Dr. Emil Margulies, chair
man of the council, resigned.
Simon Koss, who recently won
$150,000 in the sweepstakes, is fi
nancing the establishment of his
family in Palestine.
MMES WARBUG SAILS REVEAL MUSSOLINI PUN TO GIVE ARABS
ON NAZI STEAMSHIP INDEPENDENCE IN NEW WORLD WAR
‘I Am Sure That no Self Respect
ing American Jew Will Follow..
His Example”—Untermyer
When the attention of Mr.
Samuel Untermyer, president of
the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi
League to Champion Human
Rights was called to the public
announcement that Mr. and Mrs.*
James P. Warbug were sailing on
the Bremen, his only comment
was “Mr. Warbug has the ‘dis
tinction’ of being the only promi
nent Jew who has travelled on
a German boat flying the Swas
tika flag since the beginning of
the crucifiction and disfranchise
ment of the German Jews by the
Hitler regime.
“In view, however, of the past
performances of that gentleman
in his relations with Germany,
neither his fellow Jews nor his
non-Jewish fellow Americans
should be surprised at anything
he does to emphasize and flaunt
before them his sympathy with
the Hitler regime and his want
of sympathy with the persecuted
German Jews. It can be accounted
for, if at all, but not excused,
only on the theory that his bank
er relatives and associates in Ger
many are in a difficult position
with that government and that
he therefore finds himself im
pelled to do everything possible
to help them. Regardless of the
effect upon his own people—that
is what he has been doing.
“I am sure that no self respect
ing American Jew will follow his
example of travelling upon the
German ship, where his fellow
Jews are not regarded, socially or
otherwise, as the equals of the
servants who wait upon them.”
New Workers Settlement
Founded In Palestine
Publication of Letters Brings to
Climax Rumors Circulating in
the Arab Press
Rehoboth, Palestine (WNS—Pal
cor Agency)—Another link was ad
ded to Palestine’s chain of modern
workers settlements, when founda
tion stone ceremonies were held
nearby at Ramat Aaron Eisenberg,
a small holding settlement named
after one of the earliest pioneers of
Rehoboth. The entire settlement
consists of fifty-six dunams of land
bequeathed to the Keren Kayemeth
by the deceased Eisenberg. Loans to
build twenty small homesteads of
2% dunams each are being provided
to J,he workers by the B'nai B’rith
lodge of Rehoboth, of which Eisen
berg was president. The homesteads
include small allotments of land
which will be developed by the lab
orers in their spare time. It is hoped
that this type of workers settlement
will be the precursor of others
throughout the country.

Rabbi Abraham Shusterman, of
Athens, Ga., will address the local
order of B’nai B’rith, at its regular
meeting, Wednesday evening at the
Standard Club. Dinner will be
served at 6:30 and the meeting will
be opened about 7:30 P. M.
Speaking on “Jewish Student
Life at the University of Georgia”,
Rabbi Shusterman will tell of the
new work made possible by the re
cent contribution given by the
Fifth District of B’nai B’rith, of
which Atlanta is a m’ember. B’nai
B’rith has already established Hil-
lel Foundations, or cultural centers,
at more than a score of American
colleges. The award to the Univer
sity of Georgia is for the advance
ment of Jewish education and cul
ture among the Jewish students on
the campus, and it is hoped will
ultimately lead to the establish
ment there of a Hillel Foundation.
Dr. Shusterman who divides his
time between his congregation and
the University, will tell of the ac
tivities he directs. Edward M.
Kahn, president of the Atlanta
lodge, will preside. Reservations

New York (WNS)—A campaign
to exclude Jews from public office
in the United States is being or
ganized by the American National
Socialist League, one of the two
organizations in this country, it
was disclosed at a rally in the
Bronx. Dr. Herbert jLaage, one
of the leaders of the League, read
excerpts from a forthcoming book
let soon to be published for the
guidance of members and these
excerpts made clear the Nazi pro
gram. In commenting on the pro
gram Laage said, “These ideas
must be impressed as flaming
swords in our minds. Then will
we National Socialists be able to
carry our idea throughout the
United States for the benefit fo
ourselves and the entire nation.”
Reich Eases Money
Transfer For German
Jews In Palestine
Berlin (WNS) — German Jews
resident in Palestine will now be
able to transfer a portion of their
cash holdings on deposit in Ger
man banks if they can satisfy the
Nazi financial authorities that they
emigrated from the Reich with
such a small part of their holdings
as to make it impossible for them
to live in Palestine. By the terms
of a decree issued by the ministry
of finances German Jews living in
Palestine who come within the
terms of this order may shift some
of their money from German banks
to Temple Society, the German
bank in Palestine. The Reich cur
rency office, however, must ap
prove the transfer of any sum in
excess of 60,000 marks.
Jerusalem (WNS—Palcor Agen
cy)—A secret agreement whereby
Benito Mussolini of Italy allegedly
undertook to guarantee the na
tional independence of the Arabs
in Palestine and Syria in the
event of a new world war was re
vealed here by the Arab newspa
per, Jama Islamiah, which pub
lishes a photostatic copy of a let
ter giving the gist of the report
ed agreement with II Duce.
Mussolini believes that another
world war is imminent, according
to the nationalist leader who
stated that he had come to an
understanding with the Italian
Premier in return for a pro-Italian
campaign among Arab national
ists.
The publication of the letter
brings to a climax rumors that
have circulated in the Arab press
during the past few weeks in re
gard to a secret agreement be
tween Mussolini and the Arab
groups who are still striving for
national independence in the Near
East.
The letter, which evoked a sen
sation throughout Palestine is
signed by the noted Istaqlil (in
dependence party) leader, Shah
Ibasslan, and is addressed to Hal
Amin el Husseini, Grand Mufti of
Jerusalem. It confirms widely-
broadcast allegations to the effect
that the Arab nationalists under
took to conduct pro-Italian prop
aganda in Arab countries with the
aim of reorinetating Arabs toward
Italy as the power which supports
Arab independence aspirations.
The reports also stated that
Italy had pledged itself to inter
vene in favor of Arab independ
ence in Palestine and Syria in
event of a world war, when Eng
land and France will be involved
in difficulties elsewhere. England
now has the Mandate over Pal
estine and France over Syria.
Ibasslan, who visited Mecca last
summer in the company of the
Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, subse
quently conferred with the Su
preme Moslem leader in Jerusa
lem. His letter, which was pub
lished in a hostile paper today,
is written from Geneva and is
dated February 20, 1935. Address
ing itself to the Grand Mufti, it
says:
“Presume you have been in
formed of the conclusions reach
ed in Rome between me and mem
bers of the Italian Government,
concerning the subject of the dis
cussion that we had in Mecca and
our agreement in Jerusalem. I am
satisfied with my last interview
when I received an assurance,
made by Mussolini personally.
“I am convinced that Italy will
not dare to treat us as have Eng
land and France. It has been
agreed that Italian propaganda in
Arab countries should start forth
with, as the ‘man’ said he fears
outbreak of world war, and if the
grounds are not prepared now, the
opportunity may be wasted.”
The Shah also mentions in his
letter that he has written to the
Syrian Istaqlil leaders to start
such pro-Italian propaganda im
mediately, and has asked them to
communicate with the Mufti and
follow his instructions.
The publication of the letter to
day coincides with the beginning
of the Nebi Musa (Feast of the
Prophet) festivals in Palestine
which have been organized by the
Grand Mufti. The revelation of
