THE ARYAN MYTH
( Continued from Page 6)
Since that time, false doc
trines about race, race purity and
race superiority have been used as a
pretext for the greatest cruelty.
What is written and said today
by the leaders and teachers of
National-Socialism concerning Ar
yans and non-Aryans is not only
(piite unscientific but also quite
mad. It would be unworthy even
to refute such statements in a se
rious discussion, but a few instances
will serve to convict themselves
<>f madness.
Herman (iauch, in ,\V//c (irutul-
laocn dor Ixassrn forsrhn n d, raises
the question:
“If non-Nordics are more
closely allied to monkeys and
apes than to Nonlies, why is it
possible for them to mate with
Nordics and not with apes? The
answer is this. It has not been
proved that non-Nordics can
not mate with apes.”
According to the same apostle of
“new “ race t heories.
. . the Nordic race alone
can emit sounds of untroubled
clearness whereas among non-
Nordic men and races the pro
nunciation is impure, the in
dividual sounds are more con
fused and like the noises made
by animals, such as barking,
snoring, sniffing, squeaking."
Translated by John (iimther,
The Nation, ( XL., 11LT3, 14!)f.)
^uch incredible aberrations would
be laughable if they were not
fraught with such tragic implica-
t ions.
Some day, when the causes of
race hatred have been removed,
the pogroms and persecutions of
contemporary history will seem
like a mad nightmare. When no
human beings have the power to
exploit their fellows, when the few
no longer profit by the starvation
and misery of the many, then race
hatred will die because it will have
nothing left to feed on. In that
happier age, all the races of man
kind will be developed to the high
est of which they are capable, with
out discrimination. None will be
a foil for the others, none will have
to bear the brunt of mistakes made
by the others. Instead, all will
contribute from tlicit several tal
ents and endowments to the gen
eral enrichment and delight of
mankind. 1'oday, while we are
still far away from this ideal state,
it is nevertheless important to
keep it constantly in mind as the
goal towards which we must work.
And one of tin* most important,
immediate tasks is to encounter
hatred and lies with the scientific
truth concerning the false claims
of any “race,” whether Aryan or
other, to dominate over its fellows
or to persecute them on the grounds
of a mythical, non-existent supe
riority.
THE FIGHTING IDEALIST
Continued from Page 7)
occupied a special, reserved place
in his affections. In the days when
the huge home on Washington
Street housed scores of orphans,
Herbert Haas was one of the many
men and women who experienced
their happiest moments in the
presence of the children.
It was Jacob Haas who served
as treasurer on the committee that
constructed the Hebrew Orphan's
Home. Here again, is an instance
of Herbert Haas's resolute con
tinuation of his father's interests.
l he young lawyers whom he has
helper! are legion. Perhaps it is
because he remembers too well his
own struggles in the early days.
Associated with him now in his
law firm are men who have ful
filled the confidence he placed in
them by making splendid reputa
tions for themselves in law.
He was instrumental in the erec
tion of the new Atlanta police
station and personally obtained the
finances for the sewerage system.
It is general knowledge that he has
had a hand in almost every civic
improvement for the common good
of the people.
He is linked by a strong spiritual
bond to the Hebrew Benevolent
f ongregation, which has reflected
in its growth the devotion of suc
cessive generations. His love for the
lemple dates from his boyhood
days, when Jacob and lima Haas
proudly brought young Herbert
and his brothers and sisters to
Sunday school on the Richardson
Street side of the old lemple.
Later in life, he taught the children
of the men and women with whom
he had grown to maturity, in Sun
day school. With characteristic
modesty, he has many times de
clined office, although he served
for two years as vice-president of
the Temple. He brought his genius
as chairman of the finance com
mittee to lhe building of the im
posing new Temple on Peachtree
Road.
Thus, in the final analysis, Her
bert J. Haas has come to stand for
something more than a successful
attorney who has made his mark
in Southern life with a minimum
of publicity. No better example
of family consciousness as a force
can be found tlian his career. Every
action that he has made bears the
unmistakable influence of the Haas
family. In Herbert Haas there
is the portrait of an entire family
of Jacob and Carolyn, the elder
Jacob and Jeanette, Leopold of
Eich, and the whole long line of
men and women whose ideals and
principles have been handed down
through successive generations to
be used as a philosophy of life
by Herbert J. Haas.
