FOR THE LIBRARY
The literary world in general but
more particularly those interested
in Jewish belles lettres owe a debt
of gratitude to Dr. A. A. Roback
for his monumental work, “I. L.
IVrctz, Psychologist of Literature”
(Sci-Art Publishers), a biographical,
critical and psychological study of
tin* man who has been called the
Yiddish Tolstoi, the Yiddish Kipling
and the Yiddish Hugo. In this
first complete biography of per
haps the greatest Jewish literary
figure of modern times Dr. Hobaek
has made a contribution to Jewish
scholarship quite as imperishable as
the works of Peretz A great
void in Jewish literature is filled by
Ludwig liCwisohn’s “Rebirth” (Ifar-
|w*r & brothers), a collection of
excerpts from the writings of 45 of
the most distinguished Jews of the
last 70 years, all of whom discuss
from one point of view or another
the question of Israel and its fate
In this miniature encyclopedia of
Jewish wisdom Iicwisohn lias skil
fully selected the most thought-
provoking passages from Einstein,
Herzl, Buber, Brandeis, Hess, Zweig
and many others to create a magnif
icent and much-needed compilation
of what modern Jewish thinkers
have written about the Jewish
renaissance. . . . Finicky Jews and
Jews, who ostrich-Iike, prefer to re
gard all Jews as saints will not like
Sholom Aseh’s “Mottke tlie Ihief
((i. P. Putnam’s), because it is a
virile tale of the dregs of Jewish
lift* in Poland, but those who prefer
realism and the Fast European
Jewish scene portrayed with tlie
vividness that we have come to ex
pect in Aseh’s books will hail this
novel as probably the greatest of
Jewry’s most likely candidate for
the Nobel Prize in literature. . . .
MUSICAL HERITAGE
(Continued Jrom Page I 5)
with a fresh, brilliant and original
stream of inspiration. A people
who have founded great religions;
a people with (»od in their hearts,
a revolutionary people scattered
over the face of tlit* earth hearing
their age-long sorrow with them for
thousands of years; a people who
have endured humiliut ions and per
secutions, who have been tried in
them as in a baptism of fire, who
have tempered their spirit in them
and have preserved it, that national
spirit of theirs inviolate through
the ages- such a people cannot but
possess a psychology supremely
qualified to incarnate its essential
nature in the world of tones. The
Jews have always been a nation of
singers, have always found in song
an outlet for their agitating griefs,
their temptations, their wrath, and
now when that nation has singled
out for itself an intellectual class,
it not only can but must speak to
the world in a musical language of
its own.”

diamond ring to the American star
after the performance.
In 18t>8 she returned to Paris to
rehearse in a new play, but con
tracted bronchial pneumonia and
died. She was 33, poverty-stricken
and friendless when her amazing
career came to an end in an attic
in the I>atin quarter of Paris. At
her death-lied was a rabbi, and
under her death pillow was a Hebrew
testament. She was buried in t lie
Pere Lichaise Cemetery through
the generosity of the Rothschild
family. It was the Rothschilds
who rescued her from a pauper’s
grave and paid for the gray slab
that marks her resting place. The
great actress and poetess had died
virtually alone, neglected by the
great and near great whom she had
charmed and amused. Today she
is almost forgotten except in Paris
where the memory of her triumphs
in tlie days of tin* Third Empire
linger for she was the first of those
women to whom, because they
were triumphantly American and
triumphantly themselves, was of
fered one of the world’s shining
tributes that of being called a
true Parisienne.

which Heinhardt had undertaken to
direct in all t lie capitals of the world.
After untold difficulties and ex
periments this project is finally
being icalizod, thanks to a young
inspired American impresario,
Meyer \\. Meisgal. Kurt Weill,
outstanding among composers of
contemporary music, was assigned
the writing of the score for this
biblical morality play.
In less than a month New
^ ork will witness the world premiere
of this great work w ritten by Werfel,
composed by Weill and directed by
Reinhardt. When the lights will
dim on the first performance of
1 he Hoad of Promise” an event
of international importance, far
transcending the entertainment
world, will occur.

men who realize the folly and
futility of war.
And in this struggle to prevent
a repetition of the honors of 1914—
1918, horrors which were thought
ended forever on Armistice Day,
1918, Jews have played a notable
part.
