Mobile, Ala.—Questioning the
premise upon which the Central
conference of American Rabbis |
based their resolution calling for
war exemption for Jewish consci
entious objectors, Captain Leon
Schwarz, one of the central fig
ures in the controversy which fol
lowed the adoption of the resolution
in Cape May, N. J., declared here !
that military absention was not “in
accordance with the highest inter- j
pretation of Judaism,” and that ‘
thousands of American Jewish lay
men will differ with the interpreta
tion.
In a letter to Rabbi Isaac E.
Marcuson, of Macon, Ga., secretary
of the Central Conference and
champion of the resolution, Captain
Schwarz called the resolution “un
timely,” and cited the bravery of
Jewish soldiers in Palestine during
the Arab disorders.
“If the ‘highest interpretation of
Judaism’ means that a Jew is to
live in a country,” Captain
Schwarz said, “accept all benefits
of citizenship, and then in event
the government of the country, in
accordance with its constitution,
calls upon its citizens to bear arms
in defense of the country—should
that happen in America and the
citizens of Jewish faith would an
swer, ‘our religion will not permit
us to answer your distress call’—
if that should happen, God help the
Jews; the 120,000,000 other citi
zens in America would not— and
I would not blame them.”
Captain Schwarz, who was re
buked for misinterpretation of the
resolution by Rabbi Marcuson,
questioned further the right of the

of wisdom, virtue and ability, and
pointed out that at Harvard “we

Geneva (WNS—Palcor Agency)—5,000,000 Jews in Cen
tral and Eastern Europe, deprived of their legal rights, are
economically ruined, Jacob Lestchinsky, noted economist, de
clared at the first business session of the World Jewish Con
gress, which heard leading Jewish sociologists present a pic
ture of misery and despair among great masses of Jews.
Plunging immediately into consideration of how to meet the
political, economic and social problems facing the Jewish
people, the Congress was confronted with two proi>osals to
alleviate the plight of those suffering from anti-Semitism or
other causes particularly affecting Jews.
The Congress was asked to es
tablish under its aegi3 (1) a Cen
tral Bureau of Migration “for the
maximum utilization of migration
possibilities and the creation of new
migration possibilities”; and (2) a
Central Bureau of Relief which,
through a Central Jewish People’s
Fund, would aid those in need of
philanthropic assistance. “The old
and inadequate philanthropy ma
chinery of Jews must be replaced”
was the keynote of tho speaker
dealing with relief needs. In addi
tion to Mr. Lestchinsky the speak
ers at the business session includ
ed Dr. Aryeh Tartakower, promi
nent Polish economist and sociolo
gist, and I. Yefroykin, president of
the Federation of Jewish Societies
of France.
In the most violent debate of
the Congress the delegates decided,
by a vote of 270 to 21, to refuse
seats to five Communists who had
themselves elected as American
delegates in a rump election in
New York. The session was fea
tured by a bitter denunciation of

perfectly justified. The seizure was
made by anti-Nazi Germans to

Writer Who Joined Christian Party Exposes Pelley’s
Neti’ Secret Plot Directed Against American Jewry
BE SURE TO READ
Southern Observations

BY DAN SWETT
The party is continually circulat
ing propaganda dodgers that all
dwell on the same theme, to wit,
the Jews. Jews are blamed for the
depression, for the Communist gov
ernment in Russia, and even foi the
dust storms and drought in the
Midwestern United States. This
last seems entirely too fantastic,
but it is nevertheless true. The
Jews are responsible for the
drought and dust storms because
the Federal Government (controlled
by Jews, of course) has allowed
Midwestern farmers to cultivate
the soil too intensively, thus break
ing up the land so that the top-soil
can be displaced by the winds.
Under the Christian Common
wealth, however, all is to be differ
ent. Money will be dispensed with
entirely, and all persons will be
employed directly by the govern
ment. Each month there will be, de
posited in the “national bank to
the credit of every citizen a certain
sum representing a month s wages.
Then all the citizens have to do is
write checks for everything that
they buy. This will eliminate the

the Jews. It is taken for granted
that the Jews will be disposed of
under the Christian Commonwealth,
for in Pelley’s own words the Jew
represents the “negative influence
in cosmic reactions” and ordinary
Christians cannot be expected to
live in the same country with this
“negative influence” and survive.
How the Jew will be disposed of
is not explained—further workings
of.Pelley’s monetary “system” are
not explained—in fact, Pelley finds
it convenient to explain nothing,
and his followers find it convenient
to refrain from asking explan

Hint Prejudice
In Track Team
Elimination of Two Athletes
From Olympics Seen As
Intrigue
Berlin (WNS).—Political in
trigues and favoritism, if not anti-
Semitic prejudice on the part of
the American Olympic coaches are
blamed for the fact that Sam Stol-
ler and Martin Glickman, the only
two Jewish members of the Amer
ican Olympic track team, were not
permitted to run in the 400-meter
relay event. The American 400-me
ter relay team of Jesse Owens,
Ralph Metcalfe, Foy Draper and
Frank Wykoff, equalled the world’s
record for the event in the heat,
but this did not prevent American
sports writers and fans from ex
pressing amazement at the elimi
nation of Stoller and Glickman.
The two Jewish boys had been
practicing with the relay men for
ten days and were not told they
would be dropped until just before
the running event.
Lawson Robertson, head track
coach', took full responsibility for
the elimination of Stoller and
Glickman, who are the only mem
bers of the American team who did
not compete in the Olympics. Rob
ertson said he picked the best team.
Sports writers, however, pointed
out that both Glickman and Stoller
had beaten Draper in practice con
sistently. Owens offered to with
draw to give one of the Jewish
boys a place on the team but he
was overruled.
Stoller and Glickman were both
quick to deny that Robertson’s ac
tion was motivated by anti-Jewish
feeling. Glickman, blamed “poli
tics,” saying that the desire of
Dean Cromwell, University of
California track coach, to give his
Californians the best break, was
responsible for the elimination of
himself and Stoller.
