Termites of Christianity
The anti-Jewish flare-up in Asheville, N. C., once the
stamping ground of William Dudley Pelley, is one of the most
serious manifestations of religious hatred that has ever reared
its vicious head in the South. Here is something that did not
happen overseas—something that was not separated from us
by land and sea—but a threat to American Jewry on South
ern soil.
We have not spared the feelings of our readers in printing
details of the sessions of the National Conference of Christian
Clergymen and Laymen, or the crude, defaming charges of
its chief protagonists. It is our duty, as an Anglo-Jevvish
organ, to bring these developments to your attention, that
you may understand how deeply the poison of anti-Semitism
has seeped into the bloodstream of American life.
The cloak of Christianity behind which the men and
women of the dissenting group conducted their campaign
against Jewry does not entirely shield them. That the true
nature of the organization is to attack Jewry can be seen in
the choice of the most notorious agitators in the country as
members of their advisory committee: Harry A. Jung, of Chi
cago, leader of the White Shirts and Crusaders; Robert Ed
ward Edmondson, who is now awaiting trial in New York
for libelous charges against Jewry; James True, who main
tains a news service and distributes anti-Semitic propaganda
from his Washington, I). C. office, and innumerable others.
The voices raised against Jewry in Asheville spoke the
profane language of opportunists and ignorant agitators of
the Pelley type—yet many men who are lending their names
to this so-called “Christian” party are recognized religious
and lay leaders. A few of these have already realized their
mistake in joining the rump group; at this writing, Colonel
Arden S. Turner, of Columbus, Ohio, whose name was men
tioned by G. G. Campbell as one of the leaders of the move
ment, has declared that his organization, the Student Ameri
caneers, has suffered irreparable harm by being linked with
the agitators, and is consulting with his attorneys as to what
course of action to take.
It is our hope that all those right-thinking Christian men
and women who were duped into lending their good names to
the movement will follow Colonel Arden’s action.
We call upon American Christians to take united action
against the men and women who have perpetrated this de
famation of Christianity and Judaism. It is clearly the duty
of right-thinking Christians to erase this ugly blot on tht
face of Christianity.
JewTy alone is not being threatened. Within the ranks of
Christianity, the termites are destroying the pillars of toler
ance, righteousness and religious faith.

Good Will Champions
The names of ten outstanding non-Jewish champions of
good will are listed on a ballot submitted to the Southern
Israelite by Seven Arts. They are: Jeremiah T. Mahoney,
Governor George H. Earle, Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg,
Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia, Dr. Stanley High, Senator
Robert M. La Follette, Westbrook Pegler, Sinclair Lewis, Dor
othy Thompson (Mrs. Lewis), and Senator William H. King.
They have during the past year spoken out fearlessly in pro
test of persecution, agitation and prejudice.
Compare their efforts with the mud-slinging activities of
the protagonists of the National Conference of Christian Cler
gymen and Laymen, and you will have a clear picture of man
at his highest, and man at his lowest.
The lot of the peacemaker is not
a happy one even in peace-loving
Israel, and I got no cheers for hav
ing suggested that we make peace
for ourselves in Palestine by yield
ing and conciliation.
Philip Slomovitz writes: “You
are all wrong, Mr. Segal. You play
the martyr foolishly. . . You are
blind to the effects that your pol
icy would have on millions of Jews
outside of Palestine whose only
hope lies in Eretz Israel, which Ish-
mael would destroy. . . The only
answer in the present crisis is the
purchase of more land, the settling
of larger numbers of Jews.”
James I. Ellman writes: “But
can we stop as easily as Mr. Segal
would want? We haxe expended
some half billion dollars in devel
oping a barren land. . . All of these
(the Jewish benefits conferred on
Palestine) hold out a promise of
something so new and so vital that
we must sacrifice all we have in its
defense.”
A. W. Robins writes: “How eas
ily Mr. Segal agrees to the suspen
sion of immigration; how light-
heartedly he dismisses forever the j come to a cross-road;
hope or intention of the Jews to
become a majority in' Palestine. . .

Precisely because I cherished
this grandeur of the Palestine en
terprise I look for a way to peace
in order that these works may be
preserved. I see no way to peace |
save by the retrenchment of Jew- | vention
ish aspirations in Palestine.
I remember driving one day on
a highway*Am which I certainly had
the right of way over all machines
traveling on cross-roads. Yet what
happened? When I came to a cer

machine coming my way at a
frightful velocity, with no respect
whatever for my right of way. I
made no point of disputing the
right of way with the mad driver.
I cherished my life; I remembered

RABBI WRUBEL’S STORY OF
ASHEVILLE CONFERENCE
(Continued from Page 1)
The Jews were charged with
having laid waste to Spain, through
their Jewish premier of France,
who introduced Communism there,
and finally that the “same group
who crucified our Saviour 1900
years ago, are crucifying his
church today.”
In the meantime the original
group took little notice of the dis
senters and continued their con-
with prominent religious
and lay leaders, emphasizing the
common dangers that face the
American people and have definite
ly thus far stayed clear of theolog
ical or racial questions. The anti-
Semitic dissenters have called a
National Conference to be held at
Washington, D. C. October 15th and
16th to discuss further plans of
Jew-haiting. It remains the sub
lime duty of American Jewry and

The Council for German Jewry
is an outgrowth of the movement
launched early this year in the
United States and GAeat Britain to
aid the Jews in Germany by reset
tling them in other lands. The
Council, which has established
headquarters in London, will hold
its first meeting there early in the
fall. The American section of the
Council will allocate funds raised
by various Jewish groups for set
tling German Jews in other coun
tries.
