Palestine and America's
War Aims
I Continued from ftageH)
some opportunity to reestablish their
lives outside Europe, we Jew ish Amer
icans, who are more sensitized to the
situation than are other Americans,
will lx* assisting our country in at
taining its ultimate goal of a more
free, a more democratic, and a more
secure world, the sort of world upon
which the freedom of America itself
depends.
Although the subject has been dis
cussed primarily from an American
point of view, there are other more
specifically Jew ish asj>eots to the prob
lem of the future of the Jews in Eu
rope. For example, a popular, non
official wave of anti-Semitism may be
far subtler and even more difficult to
cope with than the more tangible anti-
Semitism that has been stirred up of
ficially f< >r political purposes. Indeed,
non-official anti-Semitism of this sort
is likely to have wide and serious rep
ercussions outside Europe a- well as
within Europe itself.
Millions May Have It should not
to Emigrate ,K * n « to
labor the point
that, if some millions of Jews are to
find homes outside Euroj>e after the
war, Palestine, in spite of all the po
litical difficulties that surround it. will
be called upon to receive a very large
proportion of them. While there are
some optimists who feel that a defeat
of the Axis will result immediately in
a period of great prosjx*rity through
out the world, there are many other
recognized and responsible economic
authorities who fear the contrary.
They remember that the world was in
a serious economic condition for sev
eral years before Hitler began his
preparations for this war, and they
are aware that economic recovery was
unable to take place even before his
advent. They remember that govern
ment relief, constituting a distribution
of wealth accumulated in the past, and
then the even more costly war prep
arations that were resorted to in Eu
rope and later in America, were the
only means by which any impetus
could be given to commercial eco
nomic activity on both continents.
Therefore, they fear that once again
it may lx* necessary to resort to such
measures.
Obviously, if that highly probable
likelihood should eventuate, there will
be few, if any, countries economically
or psychologically ready to welcome
large numbers of immigrants, whether
Jewish or otherwise. To prevent the
rise of spontaneous anti-Semitism in
Europe, it may lie necessary to en
able millions of European Jews to
emigrate. Millions of people cannot
