Kosher Meat
Now Available
In Bavaria
WASHINGTON — < Special i —
Jewish displaced persons in
Germany now are eating kosher
meat slaughtered in an approved
orthodox Jewish slaughterhouse
for the first time since 1933, ac
cording to a report received by
United Nations Relief and Re
habilitation Washington head
quarters.
Through co-operation between
the Military Government and
UNRRA officials in Bavaria one
of the first kosher butcher shop
has been opened in Munich,
During the first week, 20 oxen
were butchered in the Munich
slaughterhouse according to the
Jewish tradition. Special knives,
wielded by the Rabbi were used
for the slaughtering, and the
meat was inspected by the
Jewish representative. After re
ceiving the kosher stamp, the
meat was delivered to the 4,000
orthodox Jews in UNRRA as
sembly centers in Bavaria, Ger
man sources supply the fresh
meat.
Some Orthodox Jews have ob
jected to the beef as supplied
by the U. S. Army and UNRRA
messes, Red Cross parcels and
regular rationing when it had
not been slaughtered according
to Jewish religious procedure.
