Rabbi Martin I. Hinchin was
elected unanimously as spiritual
leader of Congregation Emanu-
£1 at a membership meeting last
Monday.
Rabbi and Mrs. Hinchin will
leave Dothan this week to visit
several congregations of the
Southeast Council of the Union
of American Hebrew Congre
gations before returning to the
Hebrew Union College in Cincin
nati. He will receive his or
dination in June and will as
sume his duties as the Rabbi ot
Congregation Emanu-El and as
the Director of the Union’s
Southeast Council on August 1st.

courteous, helpful, charming and
loyal students at the college. He

Hotel. United States Senator

The deadline for entries in the
Y.M.H.A. handball tournament
is April 28. The tournament
starts May 1. Thirty five mem
bers have already signed up for
singles, and there are now
thirteen entries in the doubles.

meeting at the Thomas Jeffer
son Hotel, Tuesday night. At

Governor and Lieutenant Gov
ernor, as well as the candidates
for State Senator from Jeffer
son County, and the candidates
for the House of Representa
tives from Jefferson County,

Auxiliary, will hold a joint ban
quet on Monday night, April 29,
at 7:30 o’clock, at the Holly

the Georgia Power Auditorium,
Wednesday. The subject was
“Days and Nights’’ by Konstan-
tine Simonov. These book re

Leon Goldberg, the U. S.
marine who won fame as the
“captain who tried to win the
war by himself" in the Battle of
the Marshall Islands, has gone
into business in Savannah.
Major Goldberg, who was dis
charged a few months ago after
his return from Okinawa, has
purchased-the firm of I Center
& Co., 244 West Broad street.
Major Goldberg married Miss
Evelyn Center, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. I. Center. They are
making their home at 301 West
Thirty-ninth street.
I Major Goldberg took formal
charge of the Center company.

| has been in operation in Savan-
I nah for 41 years.
| The famous Marine, who en-
j tered the corps in 1939. after his
graduation from the University
of Iowa, is the Goldberg whose
exploits were featured in Life
magazine and other national
publications, and even became
the basis for a True Comics
cartoon series. He was in the
Twenty-second Marines of the
Fourth Marine Division in the
Marshalls’ invasion, and was
with the First Marine Division
in the invasion of Okinawa.
Later he served in China, at
Tsingtao. returning to the
United States the first of the
year.
JEWISH WAR VETERANS
SPONSORED TEMPLE DANCE
A record turnout of veterans
was evidenced on Saturday night
at the Temple when the .JWV
served as hosts for ex-GI’s, and
servicemen and servicewomen
stationed in the Atlanta area.
Many of the boys and girls had
not seen one another in several
years. "Get reacquainted with
your friends of old, and meet
new friends’’ was the theme of
the evening. Ex-Marine Captain
Arthur Weiss and ex-Lieutenant
Morris Arnovitz were on hand to
greet all the veterans and their
guests.

as judge of the Municipal Court
from 1933 to 1943, was the district
co-chairman of the War Finance
Committee. He is a past master
of the Landrum Lodge of
Masonfe.
Mr. Levy, a prominent local
attorney, recently returned from
five years of service in the armed
forces, where he attained the
rank of lieutenant-colonel in the
air corps. He is a past president
of the. Savannah lodge of B'nai
B’rith; and is a member cf
Temple Mickve Israel, the Bro
therhood of Mickve Israel, and
the Jewish Educational Alliance.
He is a graduate of the Univer
sity of Virginia and received his
law degree from Harvard Law
School.
In a joint statement, Judge
Lewis and Mr. Levy said:
