Our forefathers wrought wisely and well. They saw that men
could not be secure in their life, their liberty, and their temporal
happiness unless each man was secure. They saw that the individual
could not be secure unless he was protected from the changing
whims of rulers, parliaments, majorities. So they sought some other
base on which to predicate such security.
There is only one ultimately stable base, as they clearly saw, and
that is God. Accordingly, having revealed the context of their think-
ing by appealing to “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God”, they
went on to state “that all men are created equal, that they are en
dowed bv their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among
these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

We would do well to reaffirm that faith today, in practice as well
as in precept. For we have seen the abyss into which denial of
human rights can plunge us, and we have seen that majority agree
ment is no safeguard against the plunge.
Unless we love our neighbor because of love of God, we shall pro
bably not love him for long, if at all. Rut if we remember that God
is the Creator and Disposer of all things, that Ho “made of one blood
all nations of mankind,” that He is our Common Father and all of
us His sons, that we are therefore brothers one of another, that it is
His will and His inexorable law that we live, as befits brothers,
fraternally, we may count on His justice and hope for His mercy.
