Louis Mayer Tells of Part Movie Takes
In Keeping High Standards of Freedom
liberties won on many battle
fields must be preserved! This
serious responsibility we share in
common with the newspapers and
the radio.”
According to Mayer, a power
ful nation challenges and discred
its the liberties he has mentioned,
and seeks to spread its influence
to dominate the lives otf men and
women in smaller nations. He
believes that all groups and) all
classes enjoy the freedom and
prosperity of America. Motion
pictures portraying actual scenes
in American life are welcomed by
all liberty-loving countries, and
frowned upon and denounced
wherever liberty is suppressed.

HOLLYWOOD
Intelligent self - discipline of the motion picture industry
B. Mayer, head of the largest and richest film studio in Hol
lywood. Metro-Goldyn-Mayer.
‘Tn common with the newspa
pers and radio, the screen fights
the battle of freedom of speech,”
Mayer declared “Intelligent self
discipline is our greatest assur
ance that the freedoms guaranteed
us by our constitution will not be
denied. By maintaining high
standards, by adhering to the
truth, films can preserve the
right to this freedom.”
In emphasizing the close rela
tionship between the newspaper
business and the picture indus
try, Mayer said: “We have much
in common, your business and
mine. There are few enterprises
in the country which have as
much competition as the motion
picture and the newspaper. The
expenditure of fifty-two million
dollars annually in newspapers,
places our industry third on the
nation’s list of advertisers."
Besides ranking third as an ad
vertiser, Hollywood rivals the na
tion’s capital in news that attract
the world. There are over 500
newspaper and magazine corres
pondents in Hollywood represent
ing every language and nation on
earth.
Speaking of the threat of un
democratic influences in America,
Mayer declared: “For over a cen
tury and a half, the press has
battled to preserve our American
way of life; then came the screen,
and then radio, two powerful aids.
In every age, serious crises have
arisen. Today, there is an undem
ocratic state on the march. Its
political philosophy is foreign to
our traditions. This crisis rve face,
and few have ever equalled it.
“It is not a battle among Our
selves. It is not a battle between
two countries. But it threatens the
way cf life upon his planet. It
threatens our fundamental con
cepts of human life and liberty.
“More precious than our lives
we hold our liberty ... a liberty
that means free speech, free
press, the right to assemble and
demonstrate against real or imag
inary wrongs and the right to
worship at any shrine ... a lib
erty that means free enter prises
and unlimited opportunity. These
Haifa Oil Flows;
Pipeline Out
HAIFA, (JTA)—The produc
tion of benzine, kerosene and
other petroleum products began
last week in the Haifa refinery.
Storage tanks, secretely prepared
by the Israeli Government, were
ready to receive the refinery’s
products.
It is assumed here that crude
oil has been reaching here from
abroad by tanker, since the Iraqi
pipeline is completely shut down.
A small staff of selected skilled
Jewish technicials worked all of
last week to get the plant back
into operation.
“Yet this same nation,” Mayer
continued, "welcomes with open
arms such pictures as *Grapes of
Wrath’, ‘Tobacco Road’ and sim
ilar fihns, which portray only a
small portion of American life.”
What can the motion picture
do in this world-encircling con
flict? The message of the screen
reaches approximately 235,000,000
persons throughout the world, in
86,640 theatres.
There is a heavy responsibility
upon the producers of motion pic
tures, Mayer is convinced. There
fore, a motion picture should not
only afford entertainment, but he
of educational value. In this crisis,
It can portray fairly and honestly
the American way of life, and
can be a powerful incluence in
the lives of the millions in other
countries who are either denied
access to our way of life, or who
DPS FOR DIXIE
Nine relatives of a Mississippi merchant, the largest single
family group of Nazi victims ever to arrive in the United
States on a DP ship, reached New York last week aboard the
SS MARINE SHARK, under the auspices of HIAS (Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society).
Rachel Winder and Israel Saekler, brother and sister of
Sam Saekler, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and their families,
reunited after they had fled Poland before Hitler’s advanc
ing armies, will live in the Magnolia state, where their kin
settled 35 years ago and worked his way up to ownership of
a department store. The family is shown above.
The Hattiesburg business leader did not hear from his rel
atives during the six years of war. The husband and a son of
his sister, Rachel Winder, were captnred and killed by the
Nazis. The rest escaped, and after the war reached a DP
camp in Germany. Since that time Sam Saekler and HIAS
worked unceasingly to obtain the necessary documentation
for the immigration of the group.
