ADL’s Miller Says All Can
Unite to Get Fair DP Act
ATLANTA—The one issue be
fore the present special session of
Congress on which Southerners
and Northerners, Democrats and
Republicans can unite is adequate
and fair displaced persons legis
lation, according to Alexander F.
Miller, director of the Southern
Office of the Anti-Defamation
League ot B’nai B’rith.
-Mr. Miller appealed to Southern
congressmen to amend the pres
ent hastily improvised, undesir
able Wiley-Fellows Act passed
during the closing hours of the
last session of Congress which, he
declared, violates basic concepts
of American democracy by dis 7
criminating against individuals
because of their religion and na
tlonal origin.
In the powder-keg situation
that characterizes the world to
day, Miller said, it is of the ut
most important that this country
strengthen its moral position by
passing fair and democratic D. P.
legislation that will give new
hope to the so-long oppressed mi
norities who were and are victims

of totalitarian aggression.
In urging that Congress forego
politics and give attention to
humanitarian needs, Miller de
clared, “I know you will appre-
cate the immediate importance ol
passing adequate D. P. legislation,
not only because it will strength
en the United States' moral posi
tion in the world, but also because
hundreds of thousands of oppress
ed people, whose only sin is that
they resisted dictatorship, look to
us for the only ray of hope in
these dark days. Every day that
passes without alleviating the
plight of the displaced persons
bring to them deeper frustration
and death."
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The five
British prisoners who have been
herd for several weeks by the Ir-
gun Zvai Leumi and later by the
Israeli (government on suspicion
of espionage this week were
brought before a magistrate in
Tel Aviv and were formally
charged with three counts—“es
pionage, spreading unlawful in
formation and securing informa
tion of military value and convey
ance thereof.” The charged are
based on the former Mandatory
Power’s Official Secrets Act and
the Emergency Defense Regula
tions.
The charges announced against
the five British subjects said that
from May 15, 1948, when the Jew
ish state was proclaimed, until
July 6, 1948, the accused “collect
ed information of military value
calculated to be of advantage to
the enemy, and used this infor
mation in a manner detrimental
to the security and interests of the
state of Israel.’ Inspector Jacob
Maltz, appearing on behalf of tne
police, declared that "there are
grounds for believing that the ac
cused are guilty of the charges”
and demanded that they be held
for two weeks until-their trial
opens.
The Britons were brought* to
court in an armored police car.
Leach, a former Palestine police
inspector, refused to rise when
the magistrate cmered the court
room. Maj. Robert Lustig, chiei
of the Israeli Criminal Investiga
tion Division, who at one time
was Leach’s subordinate, shouted
at him: “This is not a restaurant

buildings were ordered to vacate
their homes within 48 hours. The
hasty moving moving was the oc
casion for looting and more riot
ing.
On Tuesday, July 27, a Jew was
knifed when leaving the E* Nasr
cinema.
The slightest quarrel in the
market place soon flares into an
ominous brawl with the crowd
siding against the Jew, and when
police intervene the Jew is ac
cused of having slandered the
King and is dragged off to the
police station where he is imme
diately incarcerated pending a
hearing. Most victims are thus
held incommunicado anywhere
from four days to a week, and
then given a brief hearing and
sentenced.

WILLIAM OLIVER BUILDING ATLANTA
QUESTION—Do the Jews
believe in the literal truth of
every word of the Bible?
ANSWER—The Jews have al
ways revered the. Bible as being
of divine origin, but there was
far more healthy criticism
among Jewish scholars thruout
the ages with respect to it than
is usually recognized. The scien
tific method of searching the
Scriptures, or Biblical Criticism,
has, without doubt, broadened
our knowledge and deepened
our understanding of the Bible
immeasurably, but modern day
Biblical Criticism is far more
under obligation to the Jewish
Scholars of the past than is gen
erally acknowledged.
Modern students of the Bible
have come to regard the results
of their own researches as a
veritable revelation, and to
create the impression that for
a period of 2,000 years there
existed among Jews a uniform,
credulous, obstinate acceptance
of every Biblical letter as hav
ing come from heaven in the
form in which it now stands in
the text. The Jewish sages, to
be sure, never elaborated the
questions they asked and the an
swers they proposed into any
thing like a system. But no-
more does that prove that their
reading of the Bible was un
critical than does their failure
to formulate a theology prove
that their religious faith was
untroubled. They were simply
no adepts at the making of sys
tems, whether in matters
religion or of criticism.
