Jacobson Reports on Mistreatment During
Imprisonment by Hungarian Police
BY GUSTAV HERZOG
Jewish Telegraphic Agency Correspondent
VIENNA, (JTA) Israel Jacobson, director of the Joint Distribution
Committee office in Hungary who was held incommunicado for nearly
two weeks, arrived here after being released by the Hungarian author
ities. He was ordered to leajve Hungary Immediately following his re
lease. Hungarian authorities ex
plained that Mr. Jacobson was be
ing expelled for “abusing the
privileges given to foreigners in
Hungary’’ and for “acting against
the interests of the state.”
Upon his arrival here, Mr.
Jacobson issued a statement to the
press describing how he was
treated in prison and declaring
that the Hungarian security police
suggested to him in the course of
their questioning that the 1,500
J.D.C. employees engaged in aid
ing Jews in 130 communities in
Hungary represent “an espionage
net.”
The J.D.C. official disclosed in
his statement that he was kept for
12 days in the Andrassi prison in
Budapest. Throughout the 12 days
the lights in his prison cell were
constantly turned on. He was per
mitted only four hours sleep daily.
He was ordered to undress com
pletely and every article of cloth
ing he wore, from his shoes to his
necktie, was searched. During the
first week of his incarceration he
was subjected to a series of ques-
ionlngs which lasted all day. The
main charges against him, he said,
were that he conducted espionage
activities and that he maintained
contact with the American lega
tion in Budapest.
One of the charges against him
was also the allegation that he
helped Hungarian Jews to leave
the country, Mr. Jacobson stated.
He was questioned about all per
sons listed in his appointment
book. He repeatedly denied any
intelligence activity, he said, and
told the security police that the
J.D.C. is engaged in feeding Hun
garian Jews and in spending mil
lions of dollars to aid them.
During each day of his arrest,
he was compelled to sign about 50
pages filled with explanations with
regard to persons with whom he
was associated and about trips he
had made. Only during the last
days of his imprisonment was he
permitted longer hours of sleep,
he said. After spending 12 days in
prison he was told by the security
police that his presence in Hun
gary was no longer desired and
he was ordered to leave the coun
try. Six agents accompanied him
to the Austrian border, he reports.

citizen affiliated with the Inter
national Telephone and Telegraph
Company, has been under arrest
in Hungary for some time.)
“The Hungarian Government
must bear full responsibility be
fore world opinion as well as be
fore the government and people
of the U .S. for its injustice to
Mr. Jacobson and Mr. Vogeler and
it can in no way escape the op
probrium which attaches to its
conduct in these and to other acts
which it has committed in viola
tion of basic human rights and
decency.”

STATE DEPARTMENT
CONDEMNS TREATMENT
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The . .
State Department issued a strong Iff rlUngQVy OontlMlC
J. D. C. Activities
statement condemning Hungary’s
treatment of Israel Jacobson, di
rector of the Joint Distribution
Committee in Budapest.
‘The treatment of Mr. Jacob
son by the Hungarian police
authorities, which has been re
ported in the press and confirmed
by official reports to the Depart
ment, again demonstrates the no
torious police state methods which
are practiced in Hungary and it
is further evidence of the Hun
garian Government’s violation of
elemental human rights.
“The experience suffered by
Mr. Jacobson also confirms and
gives added point to the doubts
expressed by this government in
its note of Dec. 20 to the Hungar
ian Government regarding the
import of secretive proceedings of
the Hungarian police in the Voge
ler case and concerning the treat
ment which Mr. Vogeler may be
receiving while under detention.
PARIS, (JTA)—Activities in
Hungary of the Joint Distribu
tion Committee are contining
despite the arrest and deporta
tion of its director, Israel
Jacobson, it was announced here
last week by Moses Beckelman,
J.D.C. European vice chairman.
“Because the needs are so
great,” Mr. Beckelman said,“the
J.D.C. helps more Jewish people
in Hungary than in any one of
25 countries in the world where
it operates.” At present J.D.C
relief work in Hungary is di
rected by Aaron Berkowitz, with
the aim of first assisting hard
core cases, and second, “econo-
nomically displaced” persons,
such as small merchants who
have lost their livelihood be
cause of nationalization. The
second task is being met by the
formation of 50 work coopera
tives which employ 2,000 bread
winners.
