THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Friday, August 20, 1954
Dear Mr. Rosenberg:
I hope that Mr. Mortimer May
will not take serious objection to
the mistake made in the last issue
of the Southern Israelite. As far
as I am concerned, of course, I
would prefer that it had not been
done but I' know it was a mistake
of the head and not of the heart.
But it is a coincidence for as
you know, Mr. May is a very,
very strong Zionist and as far as
I am" concerned, I am an Anti-

Some people can hide their
errors. We find ours published on
the front page, as the above letter
indicates. What association caused
us under pressure of press-time to
write Armand instead of Mortimer
with the key name of “May” we’ll
never completely know.
Though the two hold antipodal
views on Zionism, both are men
of business and communal accu-
men, charming and capable. If we
had to do it, we couldn’t have
gotten any nicer men confused.

WRITER MOURNS DEATH
OF RAB PIASSIC
DEAR EDITOR:
We once had an old, old tree in
our backyard, the oldest tree in
our neighborhood. In the winter
it stood black and gaunt, gloomy
looking against the deep dark
green of the pines. The winds of
many years had left their imprint
on its gnarled limbs. The servants
of nature had gnawed upon it,
sapping it's strength until its bark
hung loosely upon it, and beneath
its shade, the grass refused to
grow. But year after year as my
children grew up, they played in
its dappled shade, and climbed
among its twisted branches ,and
fell out of it, and cried, and
laughed ,and grew prodigiously.
In the supimer the birds came
and nested in it, and swayed from
its topmost twigs at dawn and in
the dusk singing their prayers to
their Creator.
Once a year, for a few short
days around Passover, it seemed to
forget that it was old and faded
and sick and useless. It wrapped its
withered limbs in a cloud of pink-
white blossoms and flared out in
beauty that dimmed the splendor
of the dogwoods. It danced with
every little wind that blew, as if
to say, “Look, folks, there is life
in this old tree yet.”
Then one night a storm came,
accompanied by lightning and
thunder. In the morning my
youngest son came in the house
and said with tears in his eyes,
“Dad, the old tree is down, broken
in half. The old tree is dead.”
Our yard seemed to be empty. We
loved the old tree and we will
surely miss her.
At our little Schule on Universi
ty Drive, a little old man would
come to pray every morning. He
was old and gray and aged and
bent, but his mind was keen and
clear. At tfie reading of the Torah,
he would stand nearby and listen
and repeat every single word for
he knew the Torah almost by
heart. After the davenen, he would
sit down with his young friend,
Sam Roth, and study the Talmud.
