Incidentally, the question
whether Columbus was a Jew is
now again popping up in connec
tion with the Tercentenary cele
bration. A body of literature has
been produced tending to prove
that Columbus was Jewish. In a
recent work, Prof. Salvador de
Madariaga, of Oxford University,
presents a great array of evidence
jin support of his conclusion that
! Columbus “was a Genoese of
Spanish-Jewish origin.”
However that may be, one thing
is certain — a number of Jews
aided Columbus. They included
Judah Cresques, the “map Jew”
who headed a school of naviga
tion; Abraham Zacuto, astronomer;
and Levi ben Gershon, inventor
of nautical instruments .The Amer
ican historian Herbert B. Adams
wrote: “Not jewels, but Jews, were
the real financial basis of Colum
bus’ first expedition.”
Among the Jews who are known
to have accompanied Columbus
were Roderigo de Triana, Alonso
de la Calle, Roderigo Sanchez,
Marco Bernal, the fleet’s physician;
and Luis de Torres, interpreter.
The latter was the first European
to set foot on American soil.

CONVENTION NOTES:
at
Industrial Boulevard
The Hadassah annual conven
tion which opens Sunday (Aug. 22)
in New York will be the most im
portant convention of any of the
American Zionist organizations this
year.
This is because the Hadassah
today has the largest membership
than any other Zionist group in
this country — its membership
reaching 300,000 — and does more
concrete work than any other
Zionist group. Indicative is the fact
that, while other Zionist organi
zations in the U. S., including the
Z. O, A., are conducting their
activitiess on a deficit basis, the
Hadassah comes to the convention
jthis year with a financial report
[showing net assets of about $11,-
more than $1,500,000 in loans re
ceivable. Most of the loans are
held by the Israeli Government.
The assets are held in many sep
arate funds.
There are the Building Funds
totalling $7,240,000. of which over
6,200,000 is earmarked for the
erection of the New Medical Cen
ter and Medical School in Israel.
There are the Trust Funds totalling
$1,250,000, of which almost $1,000,-
000 are pension funds restricted
for the use of Hadassah employees
in Israel.
There are the Relief Funds and
Special Funds totalling $2,335,000,
which have been designated by
the Hadassah for specific pro
grams. There is the Administrative
Fund totalling $627,000, which in
cludes more than $90,000 for
change-in-office-premises fund.
Hadassah receipts during the
year totalled $9,626,000. They ex
ceeded disbursements by about
$1,900,000. Most of the excess re
ceipts are accounted for by the
portion of income for building
funds which is retained until con
struction progress requires its
transmission.
During the year, Hadassah spent
for Israeli programs $6,000,000,
excluding $814,000 raised in ac
cordance with Hadassah’s agree
ment with its Israeli employees;
however, these funds were not
disbursed.
During the same period, Ha
dassah spent $910,000 for the ad
ministration and operation of all
its programs in the United States.
This is a decrease of $137,000, as
compared with previous years. Al
most all the decrease was in the
Shekels transmitted to the World
Zionist Organization, which to
talled about $20,000 as compared
with the $154,000 in the previous
year.
ZIONIST PLANS
The Zionist Organization of
America is mapping plans to lick
a number of organizational prob
lems concerning the financial re
lationship between ZOA national
headquarters and its district and
regional branches. Many districts
are under the mistaken impression
that funds in their treasury are
theirs to dispose of, or to hold in
the bank.
The ZOA national ofice is now
going to make it clear to them
that all funds collected by them
are the property of the Zionist
Organization, and should be trans
mitted to ZOA headquarters im
mediately upon receipt. Some re
gions look upon the national office
as "they,” and give to the Ameri
can Zionist Fund only token allo
cations instead of considering
themselves as an integral part of
the ZOA system. National head
quarters claims that quite a few
functions are still being held at
too great an expense for too little
return. Something will be done
to check this development.
The new ZOA administration,
under the presidency of Mortimer
May, is also determined to re
cruit more volunteer workers and
leadership for the movement.
American Zionists who think
that only the Jews are now en
gaged in erecting new buildings
for their communal activities,
should follow the movements of
the Arabs In this country. They
will learn that a handful of Syri
ans and Lebanese, in St. Peters
burg, Fla., got together to build a
$100,000 modem community club
house there.
