A Personal Disgrace
The fact that racial and re
ligious prejudice should, in
any form., exist in a great de
mocracy, is an incredible
mockery of the very word
democracy. It should be con-

sidered in the light of a per
sonal disgrace to every citi
zen of that same democracy.
A disgrace as shocking and
as tragic as that of the dis
covery that a near and dear
member of one’s family has
become a hardened criminal.
For prejudice is a crime. It
is a crime against the demo
cratic ideal, a crime against
the teachings of Christianity,
Judaism and the other great
religions, a crime against hu
man decency and a crime
against just plain common
sense. Furthermore, it is a
crime for which every Ameri
can citizen, directly or indi-,
rectly, is responsible, if not
for its inception at least for
the continuance of its pres
ence in our world today.
We are responsible because
of our apathy in side-stepping
the issue, because of our out
moded give-i t-t i m e-i t-will-
cure-itself attitude, because

BROTHERHOOD LEXICON
by Joseph T. Shipley
KIN applies to all of us. Words, like human bellies, are related.
Kinship Is a fellow-feeling that should underlie our thoughts of other
folk.
HUMANITY means both human kind and human kindness. Kind
ness should be as widespread as our kind—mankind.
RESPECT is rooted in self-respect. When a man has a basic as
surance of his own worth, he does not have to feel “superior,” he has
no need of looking down on others so that he may look up at himself.
A man who has self-respect respects others.
HUMILITY is bred of true-respect, for It enables one to look at
the whole responsive world with neither superiority nor Inferiority—
but with the warm equality of neighbor and friend.
CONSIDERATION, regard for others, and esteem, follow in this
train.
UNDERSTANDING of oneself increases one’s understanding of
others. This may bring down the self-estimate of the unthinking; it
will bring nearer the sense of the equal worth of all human spirits.
DEMOCRACY rests upon belief in the worth of man. This means
the worth of all men. The champions of democracy must therefore be
armed not merely with pride but with humility; with a sense of
responsibility, of brotherhood and human equality.
BROTHERHOOD should be not merely a word but an attitude.

of our kidding ourselves with
the preposterous fable that it
is a special problem to be
solved by the special persons
affected. The problem is our
problem, and, as long as pre
judice exists in our land, we
are the persons affected.
The solving of it must be
done by us all, each and every
man, woman and child of
this nation, of every walk of
life and of every race, creed
or color. It must be solved
by our actions, by our words
and by our thinking. And if
we and our children are to
survive as living creatures
worthy of the name of hu
man beings, it must be solved
not in a theoretical future,
not tomorrow, but now, this
very instant.
Common to all Christians and Jews and any creature
created by God is the great Commandment of Love . . . True
charity admits of no substitute. If we prostitute our love by
admitting some and excluding others from our affections be
cause they differ from us in race, religion, color political be
liefs, then we are counterfeit religionists and traitorous Ameri
cans.
