New Year Message
Lessons For Future
Uy RABBI ABRAHAM OHRENSTEIN
SPIRITUAL LEADER,
Beth El Synacorue, Atlanta, Georgia
Another year has whirled
by and again we stand on the
threshold of a New Year.
As this solemn season ar
rives, the hustle and bustle of
modern living is suddenly in
terrupted by the rapidly ap
proaching “Days of Awe.”
In the midst of an era of
roaring missiles and epic
making space journeys ac
companied by hopes and fears
and threats and world ten
sion, the sudden but gentle
call of the “Still Small Voice"
of the Shofar summons us to
pause, to consider and to
scrutinize our past spiritual
budget with its grave lessons
for the future.
On Rosh Hashonah we shall
gather in the synagogue and
implore our Heavenly Father
to inscribe us “B’s efer Hh-
chaim” signifying both, “In
the Book of Life” and “In the
Book of the Living.” It is a
supplication that is preghdAnt
with meaning, where the fat
ter is Especially applicable in
our day.
Whether we know it or not,
we are constantly making en
tries in the lives of those who
live around and among us. We
are inscribing ottrselves, for
instance, in the lives of our
family, in the chronicles of
our synagogue, in the hearts
of our felloW-men, or in the
