Yom Kippur
CE 7-8894 • Fret Inspection
ATLANTA. CA.
Judgment is an eternal process.
No day passes without us being
judged one way or another, and
no day sets before we are de
creed to pay for our sins of com
mission and omission.
But this day, the Sabbath of
Sabbaths that is Yom Kippur,
has a significance transcending
all the days of the year. It is the
one day in the year when man

is alone with the Alone, with
himself, the only day when he
rises above world and burden in
contemplation, in quest for iden
tity, in prayer and, above all, in
humility of spirit.
Yom Kippur is the day when
our fate is sealed in heaven. Yet
so humane is our conception of
the day of divine judgment that
not even God’s decree is consid
ered absolutely final. We of
course bow to the decree, but in
the faith that it will be diverted
by repentance, charity and pray
er.
Judgment presupposes error,
sin, human frailty and it is hence
a prelude to cleansing, the cast
ing of sins into the waters.
Yom Kippur this year comes
in one of the blackest periods in
the history of mankind. Man
kind, as we trek to our synago
gues and temples, is facing the
threat of annihilation. The bar
barians are on the march again
and the temples of the world
are trembling with fear of de
filement. May that decree too be
diverted.
Retrieving An Error . .
The Talmud says error is al
ways retrievable. But this one
is so unpardonable that I am al
most afraid to mention it public
ly. What is more, the sin was
committed in the last column I
wrote for the year and must al
ready have been entered into the
heavenly record book with in
delible script. Because I am of
the faith that the decree may
be diverted if there is genuine
repentance, I am sincerely con
vinced that heaven has already
forgiven me. Since the sin was
one against man, I must now
look for forgiveness to David
Schwartz—my good friend and
wonderful columnist against
whom I transgressed in my col
umn by erroneously giving an
incorrect title to his book CHAN-
UKA LATKES and ROTHS
CHILD’S MILLIONS. Whatever
the title of the book, it deserves
Stevenson Master Orator
By PHYLLIS BERNSTEIN
UNITED NATIONS, (WUP)—
In his several speeches before
the special session of the Gen
eral Assembly last week, Am
bassador Adlai E. Stevenson
again proved himself the master
orator.
Despite the delicate position in
which he found himself over the
Bizerte issue, his speeches were
letter-perfect, with the right
word and nuance in precisely
the right place. No one among
the assembled delegates failed
to recognize the tough spot he
was in. All his talks could be
summed up in one word—con
tainment.
In other words, “Let’s sit this

Poet Discovers
America...
Aleph Katz, noted poet and
Yiddish editor of the Jewish
Telegraphic' Agency, has just re
turned from a vacation and visit
in Los Angeles with his son
Ephraim, an engineer with Lock
heed Aircraft, full of California
sunshine and enthusiasm for the
Golden West. Since I have some
familiarity with the mystical
operations of the Muse, I am
willing to predict that Aleph’s
new experience will translate it
self into verse in due time. The
first word he said to me on re
turning was “Zip, I discovered
America on my trip.” Aleph, we
are all re-discovering America
these days even as America is re
discovering itself. This is a vast
land, with unique landscapes and
colorful pastures. But what is
more—it has a richness that goes
beyond soil and mountain tops.
Aleph during his stay was re
ceived by the Yiddish literati of
L.A. at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Meyeer Drozd. And this is an
other facet of Jewish life in
America that has not yet re
ceived full attention. If San
Francisco is the concentration of
“beat” poets, L.A. is the sanctum
of a wide circle of Jewish crea
tive writers who have made a
distinctive contribution to Yid
dish creativity. In the early days
an encounter with a Jewish poet
would conjure up New York’s
East Side. Today the poets and
artists of Yiddishland are of
America as if native-born, ex
cept in tongue and shades of
theme. I have often thought
that if a book were ever |>Ub
lished under the title “America
in Jewish Literature,” its impact
would be tremeridously revealing
apart from its cultural and artis
tic value.
