PLAIN TALK—By Alfred Se*«l
What’s The First Mitzvah?
The other Bay I mot my friend
Emanuel Oamorxn again I hadn’t
seen him for a long time . and
now he stood before my eye* in
a photograph in The Southern
African Jewish Times of Johan
nesburg. (This Jewish paper out
of Southern Africa comes to my
desk regularly.)
Dr. Emanuel Gamoran in South
Africa 1 I knew him at a neigh
bor oi mine in the same Cincin
nati suburb, rather far back
there. He was . . . and still is . .
Jewish education director for
the Reform Union of American
Hebrew Congregation* which
then had its offices in our town
for many years. (It haa moved to
New York, as if Reform needed
that big spot to grow up in.)
Well Dr. Gamoran was down
there in South Africa to Launch
a Reform campaign under the
auspice* of the South African
Union for Progressive Judaism.
He was chief speaker at a big
dinner in Johannesburg.
The Southern African Jewish
Times was reporting his speech
to the Africans . . “The Reform
movement,” he said, “is dominat
ed by One powerful drive . . to
preserve the essence of Judaism
as the vital force in Jewish life."
“That essence,” he said, “is in
scribed on our building in New
York: ‘Love thy neighbor as
thyself.’ On the side of the build
ing is another similarly indica
tive inscription: ‘What doth the
Lord require of thee but to do
justice, to love mercy and to
walk humbly with thy God.”
Dr. Gamoran went on to tell
the South Africans that the dy
namic drive in Judaism was to
secure the enactment of these
ideas in daily life; it was not the
imposition of ritual conformity.
Ritual, he said, had changed
through the centuries, at differ
ent times and in different com
munities; but the ideals of Juda
ism continue unchanged.
The South African Jewish
Times goes on with further re
port on what Dr. Gamoran said
at the Johannesburg dinner.
Said he, ‘Throughout my life and
work I have remained persona
grata to all Jews in America . .
Conservative and Orthodox as
well as Reform. I believe in
Jews, and love Jew*. I follow
the teaching of the Lubavitcher
Rebbe who in reply to the ques
tion ‘Which is the first Mitzvah?’
said, “The first and greatest Ifitz-
vah is Ahavath Yisrael” ... I
love Israel.
Well, I go along with Dr. Gam
oran on what Judaism is all
about: The commandment to love
they neighbor as yourself, and
the advice of prophet Micah
who told us all to do justly, to
love mercy and to walk humbly
with God .. But . . .
I can’t go along with Dr. Gam
oran and the Lubavitcher Rebbe
on what they consider the first
Mitzvah: Namely, that the first
and greatest Mitzvah is love of
Israel.
Oh, yes, I myself venerate the
idea of Israel . . to make the
ancient land all good again . . .
a home for children of Israel who
may have no other place in the
world to live happily . . a land
that lives up to what its own
T K
ancient prophet Micah said about
doing justioe and loving mercy
and walking humbly. Only the
other day someone said to me,
“You as columnist are almost
continually quoting what prophet
Micah Mid. as if that were all of
your relgion, and I replied, Yes,
that’s my religion.”
I myself have believed that the
very first of all mitzvah* is to
try to be a decent neighbor
even to the guy who’s far off
in Africa, or in Asia or any
where else in the woi;ld far from
my own house. He’s my brother,
even though his skin may be
much darker than mine and
though he may not pray the way
I do or think of God as I do.
And I guess that even as I write
the Almighty looks down on me.
He feels no anger against me
or the least disagreement with
me. He may be thinking, “Oh,
that fellow down there seems to
have a bit of wisdom. He speaks
as member of the whole human
family and not as of any par
ticular house thereof. He’* speck
ing a big mitzvah all right ”
Yet I myself am not quarrel
ing with Dr. Gamoran and with
the Lubavitcher Rebbe. or trying
“Rabbi, why does my daddy smoke in
the bathroom on Shabbas, and
eat there on Yom Kippur?”

to make believe that God is more
friendly to me than to them. I
like rather to believe that Dr
Gamoran with the Lubavitcher
Rebbe has been thinking of the
great Mitzvah by which the land
of Israel, through its noble way
of life, shall by example come
to serve Rll mankind . to show
the world how a nation nay
live and grow up to be an ex
ample of high decency so that
the other countries may be in
spired to start living that way.
Yes, what would indeed be a
Mitzvah worthy of a country
widely known as the Holy Land
a nation that shows the
world hofw to live nobly . . yes,
in accordance . . -I'm quoting
him for the third time in today's
column . . . yes, in accordance
with what the prophet Micah
said: “What does the Lord re
quire of thee but to do justice, to
love mercy and to walk humbly
with thy God.”
Anyway, I’m happy to meet
Dr. Gamoran again ... his face
in the South African paper
after all the years in Cincinnati
during which we met quite
often. And high Mitzvahs to him
for the way he spoke up to Mi
cah.
