THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Expert on “Kill” Is Peace Apostle
By David Horowitz (
UNITED NATIONS, (WUP) —
If the god of war Mars, armed
with all the thunderbolts of quick
destruction, were to become the
world’s first apostle of peace you
would have a picture of Brooks
MendelJ.
The stocky, short man with
the mystical yet laughing blue
eyes and gentle handshake is one
of the most familiar figures at
the UN and at the same time the
most mysterious to fathom. He is
as mysterious as the atomic
bomb in quest of peace—and
just as hard to figure out. After
years of daily chats and hand-

shakes with Brooks, you are still
stumped about his true mean
ing and you end up by saying:
“I admire him and love him.”
Back of this mystery is one of
the strangest personalities on
the American scene. Brooks first
emerged into prominence when
American boys were confronted
by the Jap secret weapon in the
Pacific Islands—the “Judo” at
tack. Brooks’ deadly defense
against this terrifying weapon,
a defense which he elaborated
in his manual, “Protect Your
self,” was soon hailed as the
most outstanding contribution to
the war effort. Until this very
day he has no rival and no equal.
The reason is simple. The man
who is armed with the atomic
muscles and the lightning leap
of a lynx and who is now one
of the country’s greatest teach
ers in the art of self-protection,
insists that he draws his strength
from the vast resources of the
mind and spirit. He does not be
lieve in the use of force except
for self-protection—never for ag
gression, and never with weap
ons. When he demonstrated to a
group of juvenile delinquents
that weapons are cowardly and
no match for mind-and-muscle,
they quickly stepped forward
and threw their blades on the
table. His “I DO” system ap
pealed to their deepest drive for
heroics. The concept of his uni
que art is the reign of mind over
body, a system he calls “I DO”
in which muscular development
draws its strength from the high
er faculties of man.
The man whom John Kieran
of “Information Please” once
described as “Danger! Highly
Explosive!” actually abhors vio
lence and death — an aversion
which has made him a leading
world figure in the fight against
polio. Brooks’ one-man campaign
LONDON, (JTA) — London
police announced last week the
arrest on an Israeli extradition
warrant of Shalom Starkes, 22,
uncle of a nine-year-old Israeli
boy who has been kept in hid
ing for more than a year. The
uncle, a religious school teacher
here, wa£ sought on charges
that he kidnaped the boy, Yos-
sele Schumacher.
Police opposed bail for the
teacher, declaring that “we have
good information that the child
is in this country and we are
making inquiries to locate him.”
His counsel, Esther Iwi, said at
the extradition hearing that the
arrest was the outgrowth of a
political issue created by the re
cent national election in Israel
and declared that “I have no
doubt there is a comlete answer
against this dread disease began
when his 15-year old nephew
Jeffrey Kroll was stricken with
Polio in Mexico in 1946 and died
for lack of an iron lung in the
whole of Mexico. Even a com
mon knowledge of polio was
lacking. Brooks soon learned that
Mexico was not the only country
in the world where the polio
virus scored victories by default.
In a one-man crusade, the de
tails of which were read into the
Congresional Record by Senator
Lehman as authored by Eleanor
Roosevelt, Brooks Mendell estab
lished the Jeffrey Kroll Founda
tion, supplied Mexico with sev
eral iron lungs and got the Gov
ernment started on an all-out
world campaign against the polio
scourge as a matter of national
policy.
Following through with this ef
fort in other countries in the
course of his world tours, Brooks
actually became a one-man trail-
blazer of a global campaign
which has now become one of
the epic efforts of the UN World
Health Organization.
But Brooks remains a lone
wolf, and his one-man campaign,
like his one-man art of self
protection continues with accel
erated momentum, boundless en
thusiasm and determination. At
the present moment Mendell is
exerting all of his physical,
mental and spiritual resources in
a campaign to get Washington to
rush shipments of the new Sabin
oral vaccine to Japan where a
polio epidemic has reared its
ugly head. There are two reasons
why he insists on the oral treat
ment. In a country short of doc
tors, it is easily administered by
nurses. It gives a longer immuni
ty. °
In moments of lull in his daily
battle against the virus, which
kills blindly and stupidly and
Nachman Starkes, is back in jail
in Ramleh, Israel, to which he
was returned after a three-month
conditional pardon during which
he was unable to produce the
child. He had previously spent
almost a year in jail while the
Israeli police searched an •ultra-
Orthodox section of Jerusalem
on a petition granted by an Is
raeli court to the child’s parents.
The grandfather, apparently
with the aid of members of an
Agudas Israel settlement, spirit
ed the child away from the par
ents out of fear that the child
would not .receive a sufficiently
Orthodox education.
At the request of Israeli au
thorities, Scotland Yard had kept
Shalom Starkes under surveil
lance for more than a month, on
suspicion he had brought the
child from Israel to England,
until his arrest.

Orthodox Israeli Arrested
In London in Kidnapping Boy
which is the negation of Brooks’
doctrine of life, this strange
personality devotes his “I-DO*’
system also to the maimed and
the crippled, using his art of
self-protection for the method
ology of rehabilitation. America’s
foremost athlete is an exponent
of the UN concept of mental
health.
Brooks Mendell has thus be
come the one living man, per
haps the only man in the world
who embodies the UN formula
for converting strength into
peace and for transmuting tile
power to kill into peaceful uses
only, preferably in the freedom
from disease. If you jokingly feel
his muscles bulging from the
familiar navy blue suit—sorto-
rially, he is a navy man—he
apologetically assures you: “For
peaceful purposes only!”
Brooks is a great benefactor
but not rich enough to be a
butter-and-egg athlete. He has to
earn his livlihood and does so
as counselor in the art of self
protection at the rate of $100 an
hour. His clients are officers in
the Armed Forces from all over
the world, boys going into the
service who seek special qualifi
cations in that new guerrilla
warfare which President Ken
nedy warns the world now faces.
But as the Yale and Syracuse
University man commutes be
tween the Yale Club where he is
a resident member and the UN,
he has made the art of a world
of peace his profession. Making
a living is his necessary hobby!
