Eight years ago a woman on
her way to the hospital to have
a baby paused to open her mail
box. In her haste she quickly
tore open a letter addressed to
her husband. It was written in
painstaking hand by the Elder
Statesman of music to a fledg
ling artist and it amounted to a
gratuitous testimonal to the
younger man with the prediction
of a great future for him.
This letter writer was Pablo
Casals, the young artist was Zvi
Zeitlin, and the prospective mo
ther was me. My husband, at that
moment was winging his way
back from Prades, France, where
he had just appeared at the Cas
als Music Festival. When he got
to the hospital, just in the nick
of time, I had the distinct pleas
ure of presenting him with a
bouncing baby boy—and the let
ter, as a bonus. Such a testimoni
al is not likely to be overlooked
at any time, coming as it did at
this particular moment in our
lives, it was doubly unforget
table.
As I have come to know Senor
Casals better since that time I
consider that this letter was
neither more or less than the
norm for the gentleman, for
whether it is an inspiring tribute
to a young artist on the threshold
of a hazardous profession, or a
refusal to perform in a country
which recognizes Franco, Mr.
Casals follows his heart, and has
the courage of its convictiions.
Such enormous hoopla sur
rounding a man is bound to make
him seem larger than life, but
when Senor Casals sits down
to play, this image quickly gives
way to its very opposite and
what comes through is the sim
plicity and essential humanity
of the man. He is the picture of
Mr. Everyman, if you will, but
a Mr. Everyman who has man
aged to soar beyond extraneous
considerations into the realm of
uncompromising artistry.
A year ago Senor Casals and
my husband were participating
at the Marlboro Music Festival
in Vermont and I had the joy of
seeing my son, in whose arrival
the grand master had unwiting-
ly become associated, follow in
the path of generations of music
lovers before him and become
enchanted with the Maestro. He
sat through every rehearsal of
the Mozart Symphony No. 26
which Casals conducted, and
since that time, thanks to a su
perb recording available of the
work performed at the Casals
Festival, hardly a day has gone
by that he has not played it
through.
I was thinking about this the
other night when I went to a
dinner for Casals at the Waldorf
and he spoke of his enchantment
with Israel from where he had
just returned. “In my long life
of travelling to every country,”
he said, “I never before felt such
a deep emotion. Everyone looks
at the sky where the great ideas
live. And this is why I left the
country with great regret and I
hope, in spite of my advanced
age, to have the joy and privilege
of going back to that wonderful
country.”
Mrs. Golda Meir, Foreign Min
ister of Israel, expressed the
thanks of her country to the
Maestro “the greatest of all liv
ing musicians, the greatest of all
human beings” for having visited
it. She described the concert in
the ancient amphitheatre of
Caesarea where Casals played to
an audience of Israelis, immi
grants of the past two decades,
who had “lived to see the day
when the greatest artist of the
world would come to play for
them.”
It was a real satisfaction to
hear the mutual regard of the
man and the country expressed.
But it is not so surprising that
Israel, which represents, after
all, an ideal that has become a
reality, should appeal to the
man whose lifetime achievement
h^s represented the very same
thing.
