Druzes Hail Israel
Government for Granting
Religious Autonomy
JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Is
rael Government’s grant of re
ligious autonomy to the country’s
20,000 Druze was hailed this week
by 60 leaders of the group who
were received by President Ben-
Zvi.
Sheikh Amin Tarif, spiritual
leader of Israel’s Druze — a group
deriving its religious ideology
from Islam — told the President
that the government action was
a redress for wrongs to the Druze
community dating back to the
days of Turkish rule and the
British mandate.
Official recognition of the
Druze spiritual leadership gives
the community exclusive jurisdic
tion in matters of personal status,
such as marriage, divorce and in
heritance. Israel’s Jews, Moslems
and Christians, have similar ar
rangements in regard to personal
status. The Druze in Israel dis
tinguished themselves by the
complete loyalty and fighting
support they gave to the Jews in
the War of Independence in 1948.

Germany Compensates
Women Mutilated
in Poland by Nazis
LONDON (JTA) — Seventy-
three women in Poland who were
victims of Nazi medical "experi
ments” at the Ravensbrueck con
centration camp, during World
War II, will receive sums rang
ing from $6,250 to $10,000 each
from the West German Govern
ment, it was announced by the
Polish Red Cross today.
The agreement is the first
under which the Bonn Govern
ment will pay compensation to
victims of Nazism living in coun
tries behind the Iron Curtain. The
East German Government, which
brought a dozen of the Ravens
brueck women back to the con
centration camp in 1959 for an
anti-Nazi rally, did not participate
in the indemnification agreement.
It operates no compensation or
restitution programs for victims
of Nazism.
