In the American community
there is a growing recognition
that education, from the pre
school child to the adult, is es-
the dynamic growth
development of our eociety—
" ' i challenge is agitating the
total American community. There
is also a growing recognition that
education and citizens So mix —
and when they mix, better
schools result When educators
sen plan together for the
who are their Joint re
sponsibility, they discover not
that one or the other group is
right but that each group can be
wrong, and furthermore, that
theTe is nothing wrong with be
ing wrong, provided the fallibil

Ih Jewish life and thought the
love of Torah and research is
old. In the hierarchy of Jewish
values, in the 613 commandments
of Judaism—the Taryag Mitzvot-
education is considered on a par
with all the other commitments
put together. Judaism has always
taught that a creative and con
strictive Jewish life is possible
only when there exisits a well-
informed citizenry.
Ten years ago, in order to an
alyze properly the needs and di
rection of Jewish education, the
American Association for Jewish
Education sponsored a nation
wide study—and two years ago
published a 250-page report on
its findings. In toe introduction
to this report, toe editors stated:
‘‘American Jewish education Is
Hlrenod to Mark Twain's charac
terization of the Platte Elver as
a ‘monstrous hig river—a mile
deep river may be useful to wet
the fact, to cool the atmaaphem
and to improve toe scenery; It
cutset be the source of water
supply for toe life of a thirsting,
There
Jewry is becoming increasingly
aware of Oils and that it wishes
to deepen the stream ef Jewish
sdurnmh; indeed to make this
out of Ms chief eouCBTUo daring
toe ceasing half eeatary.”
We in Atlanta are also con
cerned with the growth, the de
velopment and the effectiveness
of eur total Jewish educational
efforts. What Is the story of these
efforts? Let us first take a look
at the Jewish schools in our com
munity.
First, we have two daily nur-

sery schools—one conducted by
the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center and another by Congre
gation Ahavath Achim—with an
enrollement of 73 boys and 51
girls for a total of 124 children
between toe ages of 3 and 5.
Second, we have two daily
kindergartens—one at Congrega
tion Ahavath Achim and the
other at the Hebrew Academy
of Atlanta—with an enrollment
of 24 boys and 13 girls, for a total
of 37 children between the ages
of 5 and 6.
Third, there is an all-day He
brew Academy—a community
wide school with a dual Hebrew
and English studies program—
with an enrollment of 85 boys
and 41 girls for a total of 126
children between the ages of 6
and 13.
Fourth, there are four week-
d a y congregational Hebrew
schools—conducted by: Ahavath
Achim; Or Ve Shalom; Hebrew
Institute (a tri-congregational
school sponsored by Congrega
tions Beth El, Beth Jacob and
Shearith Israel); and Temple—
with an enrollment of 425 and
289 girls for a total of 714 chil
dren between the ages of 7 and
14.
Fifth, there is a Central He
brew High School—sponsored by
the Atlanta Bureau of Jewish
Education—with an enrollment
of 24 boys and 15 girls for a
total of 39 students between the
ages of 13 and 16.
Sixth, there are six Religious
(Sunday) schools—conducted by
Congregations: Ahavath Achim,
Beth El, Beth Jacob, Or Ve Shal
om, Shearith Israel and Temple—
which meet once a week, either
on Sunday or Saturday morn
ings, with an enrollment of 1,021
boys and 1,239 girls for a total
of 2,260 students between the
ages of 4 and 18.
Thus, in our community, there
are a total of 3,300 boys and girls
between the ages of 3 and 18 who
attend Jewish schools. There are
approximately 120 children who
attend Jewish schools. There are
approximately 120 children who
attend both toe weekday and
Sunday schools, leaving a total
of 3,180 unduplicated students
attending toe different schools
In our communnity.
The Bureau, using the United
States Census Reports of 1960,
estimated that there are 4,190
boys and girls between the ages
of 3 and 18 in Metropolitan At
lanta. Therefore, 78 per cent of
all Jewish children in Metropoli
tan Atlanta attend a Jewish
school.
What do the above statistics
mean? What do they tell os about
toe comparative enrollments of
Jewish boys and girls to Sunday
schools and weekday Hebrew
schools? About toe comparative
numbers of boys and girls? About
toe numbers in the teen-age
group and children below 8 years
of age? These and other related
matters will be discussed in
Table Talk on December 22.

Kreyer, aged 31 and California-

Deuteronomy chapter 12.
"Deuteronomy 12 is my law

whole Mosaic Law is my law

WUP reporter.
Kreyer pointed to verse 3 of
that chapter which states: “And
ye shall overthrow their altars

their gods and destroy the names
of them out of that place . . ’’
Kreyer was emphatic in stating
that “that place” meant the Holy
