changes for the great annual
Hanukah Festival of the Israel

may regard the Hanukah Festi

Judas Maccabeus vs. one Antio-

Few at the outset entertained
any hopes that he could be de
throned, but Judas Maccabeus
gave him the well known “knock
out.” The struggle of the Macca-
beans was initially hardly more
than a fistic encounter. Matta-
thias and his five sons had little
more than their bare hands in
overcoming the agents of Antio-
chus in their first encounter.
Later, as others gathered to their
fold, the battle took on a larger
and more organized military
form.

The Garden is usually so pack
ed for the Hanukah Festival as
to require a repeat performance,
which this year will take place
on Dec. 18. It is the Big Show of
the year. The program is choked
with celebrities of the stage and
screen of all races and faiths and
sometimes some very interesting
things take place. We recall for
instance the enthusiasm of an
Israeli visitor for the beautiful
Hebrew pronunciation in one of
her songs in Hebrew by the color
ed singer Eartha Kitt Jan
Peerce, the star of the Metropoli
tan Opera House, who puts on
his tallis and tephillin every
morning, is an old standby on the
Festival programs. Edward G.
Robinson, Eddie Cantor, Jack
Benny and Cary Grant, also have
frequently given of their talents
to help sell Israel Bonds.
There is a very interesting, lit
tle “true story” this year in con
nection with the appearance of
Ralph Bellamy, who played
F.D.R. in Sunrise at Campobello.
At the time the call was made by
the representative of the Israel
Bond organization, there was the
great fire which swept Holly
wood about which we recently
read in the papers. “The neigh
borhood seems to be burning,”
Mr. Bellamy said quietly to the
representative of the Israel Bond
organization, but he did not put
down the phone to seek his own
safety until he had agreed to
make his appearance at the
Hanukah festival.
But if the performing cast is
interesting, perhaps the audience
is no less so. The audience is
composed of people to whom Is
rael is very dear. Every one in
the audience has purchased an
Israel Bond. To many in the audi
ence, it is perhaps the first se
curity they have owned. Israel
Bonds have been their introduc
tion to the world of stocks and
securities.
The script for the performance
this year was written by Millard
Lampbell, author of the play,
“The Wall,” based on the novel
by the same name by John

Hersey, dealing with the Jewish

The play, unfortunately, was
about to close immediately after
opening. The Broadway playgo
ers apparently shied off from a
subject so painful. One good
lady, however, none other than
Mrs. Isaac Stern, wife of the emi
nent American violinist, was so
impressed by the play she en
listed her husband and many
others to work to keep the play
going. Mrs. Stern is chairman of
the Woman’s Division of Israel
Bonds and now the Hanukah
Festival finds her and the play
wright working together again.
The Hanukah Festivals are
rendering a great service educa
tionally. There is of course an- be poaaible to build thoee twenty
other aide. Aa a result of them— new towns in Israel for which
of the Israel Bonds sold—it will the plans are already drawn.
