NEW YEAR MESSAGE
The Gift of Life
by Rabbi Stuart Davis
Assistant Rabbi, Temple, Atlanta
High Holy Day mg that we recite the words.
At this
season our liturgy beckons
us with the words, Remem
ber us for life, O King, who
delightest in life.” This is the
prayer that emanates from
every Jewish heart. On the
threshold of a New Year we
petition God humbly for life.
Why this? There are many
things which we could have
asked for, health, happiness,
peace and yet we do not. Our
request is “Chayim,” life.
Life, the enigma of mankind,
that which man with all his
technological skills still can
not produce, is our great con
cern during these days.
How many of us have ever
asked ourselves, “What right
have I to ask for life? Is not
life a gift, given to us by
God? Life is a gift, not a
right, and as such it must be
justified. We must search our
own consciences and honest
ly ask ourselves if what we
are living for and the life we
petition God for is only out
of selfish motivation. Has
our attitude toward our fam
ilies been one of love and
protection only because they
lend status to our own exis
tence or have we given our
selves to them unselfishly
Do we live in the world, in
our community only as a
sponge absorbing all of the
benefits, yielding nothing for
the growth of others or do we
see and feel that the world
at large is an integral part
of our responsibility to life?
A gift must be deserved,
especially the gift of life. This
has always been recognized
by the Jews; the great rab
bis and teachers realized that
man has a tendency to take
life for granted, to accept it
casually. That is the reason
that at this time of the year
we pause to look back, to re
evaluate ourselves and our
lives, to see whether we have
cherished this gift so beau
tifully bestowed by God, to
search our innermost selves
to realize our shortcomings
and failures.
It is at a time like this that
sharp focus is brought to bear
on the fact that life is a di
vine gift—a gift for which
we must be ever thankful and
what is more important—de
monstrate the gratitude by
meeting the challenge that
God has placed in our hands.
Our civilization is on trial
for its life. The future lies in
the hands of every one of us.
In us is the hope we desire.
There are no shortcuts to
happiness. Life is not so
cheap. It comes hard and we
must strive to preserve it.
Not only our lives but the
lives of every human being
on the earth. In the final an
alysis we are one brother
hood. We must be one bro
therhood, for the safety and
life of each of us depends
upon the regard we have for
every human life.
Now it is with added mean-

We pray that God will grant

us the vision to see the real
values in life, and by our ac

this our greatest, yet most
humble petition, “Remember
