Israel Begins The New Year With A New President
Zalman Shazar
Zalman Shazar, veteran
labor and Zionist leader,
statesman, scholar and pio
neer of Hebrew journalism
was elected to succeed the
late President Itzhak Ben-Zvi.
He was born in Mir, Russia.
Mir was renowned for its
world famous Yeshiva. At an
early age, he joined the
Poalei Zion party and organ
ized Jewish self-defense in
his native town and near-by
villages. As a delegate at a
secret session of Poalei Zion
at Minsk, he met Itzhak Ben-
Zvi in 1905 and the two be
came life-long friends.
While working on the edi
torial board of a socialist
paper in Vilna, he and his
friends were arrested but
soon released. Admitted to
the Academy of Jewish learn
ing in St. Petersburg, he was
a pupil of Simon Dubnow,
the noted Jewish historian.
In 1911, Shazar went to
Palestine where he wrote his
first essay, “The^ Eternity of
the Past,” which was pub
lished in the labor periodical
“Achdut” edited by Ben-Zvi,
David Ben-Gurion and others.
He returned to Russia and
continued his studies at the
Academy, went to Freiburg
and Strasburg. During World
War I, he studied in Berlin
and was on the editorial
board of “Die Juedische
Rundschau.”

tine’s political life, working
for refugees and seeking to
see how they could be helped.
In 1943, he drew up a mani
festo of the Vaad Leumi, in
which, for the first time, he
directed world attention to
the German Holocaust.
In April 1948, Shazar draft
ed the resolution passed by
the Zionist General Council,
announcing Jewish independ
ence at the end of the Man
date. He was elected a mem
ber of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Knesset and became Minister
of Education and a member
of the Executive Council of
the Jewish Agency.
For his outstanding work
in literature and scholarship,
he was awarded the honorary
degree of Doctor of Hebrew
Literature in 1958, by the
Jewish Theological Seminary
in America and received oth
er honorary awards.
On May 21st, he was elec
ted 3rd president of the State
of Israel, receiving 67 votes,
an overall majority of mem
bers of the Knesset.
