Between Succoth and Thanksgiving

“Let the Voice of Thanksgiv

There is a close connection
between the harvest festival
of Succoth and our American
Thanksgiving Day. When more
than 5,000 years ago, our an

Promised Land, they discov
ered that autumn, when Suc
coth was celebrated, was also
the blessed time when they

they humbly thanked God for
the rich crops.
Today, in the young State of
Israel, the ancient festival has
taken on a fresh meaning and
importance. Israelis celebrate
it jubilantly with special
Thanksgiving services through
out the land. Succoth is the
third of the three Pilgrim fes
tivals on which Jews from all
parts of Palestine used to
make pilgrimages to the Holy
Temple of Jerusalem.
Origin
Thanksgiving Day was in
stituted by the Pilgrim Fathers
some 342 years ago. When
they came upon the bleak
shores of Cape Cod in 1620, in
an icy winter, they saw many
parallels between their own
experience and that of the an
cient Israelites wandering for
40 years in the arid desert
after their hasty flight from
Egypt’s cruel bondage. Like
the Israelites of old, they had
groaned angrily under the iron
oppression of England’s tyran
ny; like them they had ven
tured on a trackless journey;
like them, their destination
was a promised land, not Ca
naan, “the land of milk and
honey,” but bountiful America
—the new world.
And when, like the Israelites
of old, the Pilgrim Fathers, af
ter an icy winter, when many
succumber to cruel hardships,
while the strong ones survived
and later enjoyed a plentiful
harvest, they gratefully insti
tuted “Thanksgiving Day” in
the fall of 1621. They pat
terned it after Succoth, the
joyous holiday of thanks to
God for His bounty.
Frightened and hungry for
fresh food were these Pilgrim
Fathers, uncertain of tomor
row and insecure of life itself
—yet they grew into a great
nation. They had found mercy
in the dangerous harbor of
Plymouth and had discovered
the Brotherhood of Man, al
though they could use only
sign language with the Indi
ans. And they joyfully knelt
down and thanked God Al
mighty. This was in Septem
ber, 1621.
Pilgrim and Old Testament
The brave Pilgrims were en
lightened and deeply religious
men and women. The hook
they loved most was the holy
Bible. Many of their laws and
customs were based on the
Holy Scriptures and they gave
their children Biblical names
such as Moses, Solomon and
Hannah.
National Holiday
In 1789, George Washington
proclaimed November 26th as
a day of Thanksgiving. This
happened after Congress had
adopted the Constitution. From
then on, some states observed
it one day, some another, some
not at all. Later, Mrs. Sarah
Josephs Hale, a teacher and
author (she is best remembered
for her poem, “Mary Had a
Little Lamb”), thought it prop
er for Americans to celebrate
Thanksgiving as a national 1
holiday on the same day. For
35 years, she wrote letters to
governors and Presidents about
her plans. At last in 1863,
President Abraham Lincoln
proclaimed the fourth Thurs
day in November as a national
Thanksgiving Day and a legal
holiday. So we shall celebrate
