Succoth and Thanksgiving
—from pace 6
this November the 100th anni
versary of the beautiful
Thanksgiving 'Day, a day so
dear to all.
Let Us Give Thanks
There are few holidays so
American in inspiration and so
fitting to the good fortune of
this nation than Thanksgiving
Day. Down the long years
have come the traditions of
plenty from the giant cornu
copia of our national wealth,
improved by the ingenuity and
free spirit of our people.
of our respective rituals, they
originate from identical im
pulses and inclinations.
The jubilant rejoicing over
a bountiful harvest is shared
by people of all faiths alike
and all should gratefully, in
their own way, offer thanks
to the Almighty who, through
a fertile nature, nourishes all
—an inspiring fact that should
further the highest goal in this
world — the Brotherhood of
Man.

An excellent illustration of
the affinity between Succoth
and the American Thanksgiv
ing observance, can be found
in the yellowed pages of an
old chronicle describing the
celebration of the first Thanks
giving observance in Connecti
cut on September 18, 1639. For
the pastor, Rev. Ephraim Huit,
chose the significant passage
from Nehemiah 14:4 for his
Thanksgiving sermon: “Also
that day they offered great
sacrifices and rejoiced; for
God made them rejoice with
great joy;, the wives also and
the children rejoiced so that
the joy of Jerusalem was
heard far off.”

In these times of lethal
weapons, of ruthless bombings,
Succoth and Thanksgiving
should not be days of mere
carousing, of eating and drink
ing, but solemn days of grate
ful introspection, days that
impart a wholesome message
to all mankind; that man
should become as good as “the
good and delightful earth”
