class hotel and of course a fairly
modern cinema building. And a
few doors from the cinema, Moshe
came to the object of his haste—
the Beth Hanoar Haivri, the YM
& YWHA of Jerusalem.
Were it not for the two-foot
square, wooden, weather-beaten
dirty white sign, swinging in the
dust laden air, giving that infor
mation, one would have passed it
by, wondering when the wrecking
crew was coming to lay it low.
But to Moshe this ancient struc
ture was his “home away from
home.” He knew, as he dashed up
the high stoop and pushed the
heavy wooden door open into the
dimly lit hall, he would find in one
of the upper story, cavern-like
rooms fully a dozen boys and girls,
quietly doing their homework.
Like Moshe, most of them are chil
dren of Sephardic families, off
spring of Moroccans, Iraquis, Per
sians, those whom the Ashkenazis
thoughtlessly call “Schwartze” or
“Frenks.” These, like him, are chil
dren of the under-priviledge and
‘ over-bearing” explosively enlarg
ing minority immigrants.
Here he would find one of the
staff ready, with a gentle smile,
s quite hint, or even a lengthy de
monstration to help him with his
homework. Here he would find
what was impossible for him to
find in the bedlam of his his own
home. Nor was the air of patriarcial
dictatorship at home conducive to
quite study.
On the way to the study class
Moshe stopped in the office of the
director, Eliezer Cohen, a Czecho-
Slovakian-born teacher and social
worker,and plunked his half lira
down on the desk with a smile and
a glance of pride in his bright,
black eyes. That was his dues for
the month -fifty agorot, about 17
cents in American money.
As Moshe left the room with a
“Shalom”, Mr. Cohen turned to me
“That,” he said,“was probably the
first act in his young life that
gives him a feeling of belonging to
a group in which he needs no
stealth or aggressiveness to enjoy.
He was no longer stealing what
he wants. He is paying his share.”
And that, from our own obser
vation of this younger generation
of North Africans, is something
new in the life of these youngsters.
The chaotic conditions of the
classrooms in the public schools,
the over-crowing of the home, force
an increase in the lack of respect
for authority, and lead children
like Moshe, his little sisters, and
even his adult brothers and sisters,
to the street for entertainment, to
aggressiveness, and even to violence
for "kicks”.
"Although we have these home
work classes,” stated Mr. Cohen,
“The Y is not an educational in
stitute in the sense that it teaches
subjects. It is a supplementary
institution to the public school
in the sense that it teaches char
acter.”
Moshe may spend an hour in the
homework class. He then may join
