In games of dominoes or checkers.
Or he may go into one of the arts
and crafts classes for some light
carpentry work, for wood carving,
metal work, or read in the sparse
library. Or, if it is still daylight, he
may go across the street in the
public school yard which the Y is
permitted to use for basketball
or soccer. At six he leaves for
home.
Later that evening, up until 10
p.m., you may find Moshe’s older
brother or sister either participat
ing in some folk drama or dance
or studying Hebrew, English or
photography. Some may even take
a hand in the arts and crafts
classes. And all of this for only
half lira. Here, too, they find a
social life, far more agreeable than
at home or in the cafes or on the
dark Jerusalem streets.
Unlike the American scene,
where the Jewish Community
Centers stress Jewish values, the
Beth Hanoar Haivri in Israel does
not have to combat assimilation.
But it must keep a wary eye on
the unrestricted efforts on behalf
of some missionary groups. And
the temptations offered Jewish
youngsters made unhappy by eco
nomic frustations, or by the feeling
of being looked down upon by
their Ashkenazic co-citizens, are
often too great to overcome.
For many reasons there is but a
pitiful number of members at the
Y. No more thean 250 boys and
girls, men and women from the
ages of 10 to 30. There are thou
sands who should be under the in
fluence of the Y, a mass of Sep
hardic youth, living as though sus
pended in the Jerusalem air, with
a fragile attachment to home and
school, and a dangerous attraction
to the street and to the missionary
school or youth groups.
Less than a mile away stands
another “beth hanoar,” the mag
nificent, imposing tower of the
Young Men’s Christian Association,
reaching high into the Jerusalem
sky, its surroundings a green oasis,
and not a dusty,almost wadi-like
street on which the Jewish Y
stands. One can hardly blame
Moshe, and his older brothers for
casting envious eyes in that dir
ection. And one can hardly blame
them for hoping that they, too,
could afford to belong to the
YMCA like so many Israeli Jews
do. It is rumored that a majorty
of YMCA members are Jews.
“There’s no evangelization at
the Y.M.C.A.,” was Mr. Cohen’s
reply to my query, “but our Jewish
boys are surrounded by Christian
influence. And that is a challenge
tr us.”
And that challenge may soon be
met according to Mr. Cohen. The
World Federation of YMHA’S and
Jewish Community Centers, (head
ed by Charles Aaron of Chicago)
which meets about seventy per
cent of the Y’s present budget of
$35,000 (raised mostly in the
United States through projects of
CJCs and YM-YWHAs affiliated
with the National Jewish Welfare
Board) has embarked on a project
that will build a new YMHA in
one of the most scenic sections of
Israel, half way between the new
Katamon quarters of North African
immigrant families, and the Anglo-
Saxon housing development on the
road to the new Hadassah-Hebrew
University Hospital.
Plans have already been drawn
for the venture by one ot Israel’s
most noted architects, Dr. Alex
ander Friedman, designer of the
Hechal Shlomo, the Israel Chief
Rabbinate building in Jerusalem.
The orginal cost of building
and equipment will be about
$600,000, $330,000 of which has
rlready been raised or pledged by
the World Federation in the United
States, through its Jerusalem YM-
YWHA building fund headed by
Mrs. Hugo Dalsheimer of Balti
more.
A supplemental campaign for
funds is now under way in Jer
usalem, under the capable gui
dance of Ted Lurie, editor and pub
lisher of the Jerusalem Post and
president of the Jerusalem YM-
YWHA.
And with the new YM-YWHA
a reality, some of the social sore
spots, at least in the Jerusalem
area, will be diminished. Obstacles
will be placed in the path of ju
venile delinquency, the tensions
inspired by the feeling of discrim
ination will be decreased, and
and evangelical reach for Jerus
alem’s Jewish children will be
cramped, it is hoped.
