Mrs. Sacks to
Study in Israel
Mrs. Ralph Sacks, director of
the preschool department, has
been selected to participate in a
Seminar in Israel.
The National Jewish Welfare
Board and the Jewish Agency of
Israel in Jerusalem are cooperat
ing in this pilot project. The 7
week Seminar will be devoted to
Jewish studies through courses
at the Hebrew University and
elsewhere and educational visits
planned to include knowledge
about the heritage of Jews in Is
rael and other parts of the world.
Only 26 Center workers from
Jewish Y’s and Centers through
out the country were selected to
participate in this project. The
AJCC is aware of the recognition
both to the Agency and to its
worker in having its nominee,
Mrs. Sacks selected.
Mrs. Sacks has been with the
Center since the summer of 1949
and since September of that year
has been the director of the
Nursery School and its expanded
pre-school department. During
her administration the depart
ment has grown from one serving
25 children to one which serves
225 children in a year of varying
programs.
When interviewed Mrs. Sacks
said, "Expressing my thanks for
this rare opportunity is very dif
ficult indeed. I am honored by
the selection and aware of the
trust that my supervisors and the
board have put in me." She went
on to say that the opportunity to
study and travel in Israel would
doubtless enhance her own know
ledge and feelings about Jewish
history and values and that it
could give her an added dimen
sion in her work with youngsters
and staff at the Center upon her
return. All preschool department
programs will continue on their
accustomed high level during
Mrs. Sacks’ participation in the
Seminar. Presently, she is engag
ed in the preliminary planning
of the summer program, as well
as the Nursery School and Pun
Day programs for the coming
fall. During Mrs. Sacks’ absence,
the department will be supervis
ed by Mrs. Reuben Cohen who
has worked under Mrs. Sacks’
direction for a number of years.
Congratulations to Mr. and
Mrs. B. S. Lipshutz and their
children Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ros
enberg on the marriage of their
daughter, Elaine, to Mr. Daniel
Liebfield. Also Mr. and Mrs.
Liebfield—we wish them lots of
health and happiness.
Congratulations to Mrs. Mamie
Shulman on becoming a great
grandmother once again. Also—
Mrs. Shulman was voted Mother
of the Year from the Life of 50
Club — we hope and wish that
she will be with us for many
years.
Congratulations to Mrs. Mollie
Tontak on the coming of her
grandson Steve’s Bar Mitzvah,
and to his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
M. Rob kin. We wish them lots
of happiness.
Our club celebrated Mothers
Day with a wonderful affair. Mrs.
Mamie Shulman was honored as
the "Mother of the Year,” and
presented with a beautiful cor
sage and a gift. All of her chil
dren, and several grandchildren
were there: Mr. and Mrs. Abe
Shulman, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Shul
man, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shul
man, and Mrs. Bessie Taratoot.
Many thanks to the Center staff,
and the D.J.G. girls’ club for the
