Progressive Club Has Busy
Day—Robbery, Israel’s 17th
SAM NOVAK, 87,
FORMER ATLANTAN,
DIES IN TEL AVIV
Sam Novak, 87, of Tel Aviv,
Israel died May 9 m Tel Aviv.
Funeral services and interment
were held May 10 in Tel Aviv.
Mr. Novak had resided in Is
rael for the past three years,
having lived in Atlanta for 33
years and in Chattanooga prior
to that
He was the founder of Man
hattan Bakery, and a member of
Ahavath Achim Synagogue, Shea-
rith Israel Synagogue and Anshe
S’Fard Synagogue. He also was
a member of Fulton Lodge 216
F&AM, B’nai Btith and the Pro
gressive dub.
Survivors include his wife in
Israel, four sons, Jack, Joe and
Leon Novak of Atlanta and Dr.
Max Novak of Warner Robins,
Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Philip
Enen^etin of Atlanta and Mrs
Sam Singer of New York City, 12
grandchildren and six great
grandchildren.
Mrs. Celia Smith
Mrs. Celia Frank Smth, 96, of
Savannah died Tuesday, April
27.
A native of Savannah, she was
the widow of Henry L. Smith
and a member of Mickve Israel
Temple.
Funeral services were held
April 28 at Sipple’s Mortuary. In
terment was in Bonaventure Ce
metery.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Everett Iseman; a sister,
Mrs. Viola Solomon; a grand
daughter, two great grandchil
dren and four great-great-grand-
children.
Mrs. Leah Smithberg
Mrs. Leah Barnett Smithberg,
76, of Savannah died May 1.
Funeral services were held
Monday, May 3, with Rabbi A. I.
Rosenberg officiating. Interment
was kn Bonaventure Cemetery.
A native of Poland, she was the
widow of Joseph Smithberg and
had laved in Savannah since
1914. She was a member of Con
gregation B’nai B’rith Jacob, the
Sisterhood and Hadassah.
Survivors include two sons,
Leon Smithberg of Savannah and
Maurice Smithberg of Beaufort,
S. C., two brothers, Harold and
Henry Barnett, and two sisters,
Mrs. Rose Rose and Mrs. Phoebe
Collins, all of London, England;
five grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.

Installation
The B&P Hadassah group will
hold its annual installation din
ner at 7:00 p. m. Tuesday, May
25, at Beth Jacob Synagogue, 1855
La Vista Road, N. E. Dr. Irving
Greenberg will serve as installing
officer.
A musical comedy, “Biblical
Follies,” will be presented by the
following ntembers: Misses Sara
Rice, Charlotte Vitner, Libby
Crystal, Ruth Graetz and Mes-
dames Bee Wild, Jean Sherman,
Sarah Ellison, Molly Heyman,
Esther Gray, Julia Milt, Helen
Herman and Alice Rich.
Mrs. Lillian Masin will be the
pianist and Mrs. Thelma Maka-
vitt will direct the program. Din
ner chairman is Mrs. Sylvia Held,
and Miss Mildred Brandel is vice
president in charge of program

Bob Morris of Georgetown, S.
C., father of Mrs. Sadie M. Blue-
stein of Savannah died Tuesday,
April 27.
Mrs. Lena Mark
Mrs. Lena Mark, 78, of Beau
fort, S. C., died in Savannah Sun
day, April 18.
A native of Russia, she had
been a resident of Beaufort for
the past 53 years and was a
member of Beth Israel Syna
gogue.
Survivors include daughters.
Mrs. William Lowery of De
Ridder, La., Mrs. Samuel Hanen-
berg of New Falls, Va., and Mrs.
Andrew Olesak of San Dtiego; a
son, Ernest G. Mark of Beaufort;
a nephew and eleven grandchil
dren.
Davoud Filsoof
Davoud Filsooof, 52, of Atlan
ta died FYiday, May 7. He had
been in this country since March
23, having migrated here from
Iran.
Graveside rites were held May
7 in Greenwood Cemetery with
Rabbi Harry H. Epstein officiat
ing.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Saltinat M. Filsoof, Atlanta;
sons, Fred and Adel Filsoof, At
lanta; daughters, Mrs. Alvin N.
Siegel and Mina Filsoof, Atlanta;
sisters, Mrs. A. Pourmoradi, Mrs
C. P. Ourian, Mrs. Nouromid,
and Mrs. A. Safizadeh, all of
Iran; mother, Mrs. Lea Danialy,
Iran; and grandmother, Mrs. N

apportioned Georgia Legislature
came out on the plus side.
Attorney Elliot Levitas won
hands down the District 118, Post
4, position. Since he faces no Re
publican opposition, Mr. Levitas
is assured of taking his seat.
Israel Katz, campaigning in
District 131, and Charlie Franco.
District 130, face runoffs on May
19. If successful in the run-off
bids, there will still be Republi
can opposition in the general
election.

other employees, Homer Johnson
and I. P. Ward, using cloth nap
kins to blindfold and tie them.
Ricks said two companions
joined the robber and in a short
time had the safe open, fleeing
with their loot in an automobile
with a loud muffler.

Mrs. M. A. Lippman, 53, of
Louisville, Ky., mother of Mrs.
James A. Kaufmann of Atlanta,
died Sunday, May 2.
Mrs. Lippman, the former Anne
Monness, was a native of New
York City and a member of Adath
Synagogue in Louisville.
Funeral services were held May
4 in Louisville. Interment was in
Farmingdale, L. I., N. Y.

husband, and a brother, Abbott
Monness of White Plains, N. Y.

For Israel’s 17th
Israel’s Seventeenth Anniversary
of Independence was celebrated
at a special service on Thursday,
May 13, with appropriate hymns
and psalms.
SUNDAY BIBLE SCHOOL
Closing exercises along with
observance of Mothers’ Day was
carried out on Sunday morning
by members of the religious
school. Benjamin Waksman was
recipient of the Jacob Hyman
Memorial Award as the out
standing scholar of Hebrew &
Sunday School. Benjamin is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory
Waksman. Other outstanding re
cipients of awards included the
following students: Joe Wedn-
traub, James Waksman, Louis
Konski, George Benchimol, Stan
ley Haimes, Michael Steinberg,
Michael Grunwald, Jeffrey May
