Rosh Hashonah Message
Loss of Self-Respect
by RABBI EMANUEL FELDMAN
Beth Jacob Synagogue Atlanta, Georgia
On the eve of Rosh
Hashonah I had a bad dream.
Beginning with the new
year 5726, that which had not
happened in 4000 years of
Jewish history]
finally did oc

were writing!
and speaking disparagingly of
Jewish tradition, revealing
venomous self-hate and abys
mal ignorance.
In that year, Atlanta Jew
ish organizations, dedicated
to the perpetuation of the
Jewish people, raising funds
from Jews for Jewish causes,
in the name of the Jewish
people, were openly flaunting
Jewish tradition. While they
went through the motions of
benedictions and invocations,
at their dinners, for example,
few had the Jewish self-re
spect to observe Kashruth in
their public functions. Most
were ignoring it completely,
so that an observant Jew
could no longer be part of the
public affairs of, say, B’nai
B’rith or ORT, Brandeis or
the American Jewish Com
mittee, the Jewish Welfare
Board or Israel Bonds.
The combined Jewish char
ities of that year 5726 collect
ed almost one million dollars
in Atlanta. But they were giv
ing thirty five thousand dol
lars of this to defense agen
cies to fight anti-semitism,
while six thousand dollars
went to six major schools of
higher Jewish education of
the Orthodox, Conservative
and Reform groups. In fact,
two of these defense agencies
received almost four times as
much as the combined total
of the three major rabbinical
seminaries in the United
States.
In that year, Jews were
giving to Jewish charities;
but they were giving infinite
ly more to their country
clubs, their bartenders, their
hair dressers, their golf pros,
their vacations, their card
games, themselves.
In that year, synagogues
were empty in Russia on
Sabbath mornings because

the government made it dif
ficult for Jews to worship.
Synagogues in Atlanta were
also empty that year
(with the exception of Bar
Friday, September 24, 1965
Mitzvahs): it was difficult for
Jews to find the time.
In that year, few Jews
truly prayed; still fewer
studied properly; only a hand
ful cared about G-d and
Torah, and their fellowman.
But everyone was certain
beyond doubt that he was a
good Jew.
It is a nightmare vision.
How fortunate that this was
only a dream and that it
could never happen in At
lanta in the'year 5726.
