ventory is upon us. We also
are seeking^
confirmation -
a renewal of
our lease on
life for the en
suing year —
and must be|

comings
and failures*
The YAMIM NORAIM, the
awesome days are soon upon
us, so we must search our
hearts and our souls.
We admit that we are liv
ing in a violent time with the
threat of planetary destruc
tion constantly hanging over
us. Turmoil has supplanted
equanimity, and uncertainty
has replaced tranquility. Un
rest is more prevalent than
composure. In the light of
world conditions and in an
age of power politics support
ed by nuclear weapons and
space rockets, we tend to
evaluate man’s hope in poli
tical and military terms.
Certainly in a world which
enjoys the gift of free will,
man’s doings help to deter
mine his destiny. Neverthe
less, we must accept that the
Almighty remains the Master
of world history; because
Judaism, from its infancy, has
taught belief in G-d, One G-d,
a Creator of the Universe,
dynamic in human history.
An infinitesimal, impercept
ible spark of this G-d is im
planted in every human
breast. With this value Juda
ism has satisfied the funda
mental and universal need of
man to believe in something.
We call this new season
Rosh Hashonah! A New Year!
What are the thoughts which
crowd into our minds that we
utter these words, while we
know that time is an eternal
element that no physical force
can interrupt it? The fact is
that we turn our back on the
past and the old; we face the
future and the new. We pray
to G-d that the year that has
passed has vouchsafed us,
things will be better and not
worse. The couplet which we
so solemnly intone in the
very first service of Rosh
Hashonah: TIHLE SHANAH
VEKILLOTEA, TAHEL
SHANAH UVIRHOTEA “May
such misfortunes as we had
in the old year end, may the
New Year have only blessing
in store for us,’’ finds its re
sponsive echo in the hearts
of us. Forward and not back
wards; progress and not re-
trogession, advance and not
retreat. Surely that repre
sents an accurate expression
of our thoughts and feelings
as we greet this New Year of
Jewish Calendar.
We also call Rosh Hashon
ah as the YOM HAZIKARON
the Day of Memory, of not
only the convenient but the
inconvenient memory. We
must see ourselves as G-d
sees us, the shade as well as
the light, the seamy side as
well as the smooth side which
we exhibit to the world, the
wrong in us as well as the
right, the evil together with
the good. It is the day when
our G-d-given faculty is
brought into operation once
more and we give ourselves
over to the Act of Remem
brance, and we hope to be

remembered for good and for
life. If we will but remember,
then G-d will remember.
May the Almighty grant
that on the coming New Year
our fervent hopes and prayers
be answered. May He grant
us a year of long life, of
health, and of happiness.
