Task Force Training
Institute
Ed Robbins, Director of Camp
Barney Medintz, has recently re
turned from a unique institute
sponsored by the Jewish Welfare
Board. A total of six social work
ers from Boston, Mass.; Hartford,
Conn.; New Brunswick, N. J.;
Long Beach, California; Mon
treal, Canada; and Atlanta, Ga.
gathered at the Montreal Y
Camps on Friday, Sept. 17th for
the purpose of developing a
training program for part time
staff workers in a Jewish Com
munity Center around Jewish
identification of teenagers.
The task force concentrated on
how to help part time youth
leaders in Jewish Community
Centers find methods and tech
niques in helping teenagers deal
primarily with attitudes about
themselves, their parents, their
family, Jewish groups in Amer
ica, Jewish groups overseas, and
non-Jewish groups. Further con
cern was given on how part time
youth leaders can be helped to
communicate knowledge pertain
ing to teenage members and how
part time youth leaders may be
motivated to introduce this
knowledge to their groups.
In the near future Mr. Robbins
will select a number of club lead
ers who will go through a special
training program. Careful at
tention will be given to these
clubs by the center’s professional
staff in evaluating whether there
was a significant increase in the
clubs’ program relating to the
stated objectives.
In the spring all six commun
ities will be evaluated at which
time a decision will be made
whether to expand the “Training
the Trainer Institute” on a larg
er basis.

At a recent meeting of the
Board of Directors of the South
ern Region of JWB the establish
ment of the JCY (Jewish Center
Youth) movement was recom
mended to the AJCC and other
Jewish Community Centers in
the 11 state southern region.
Through the JCY program,
formal and informal inter-center
programs for youth would be en
couraged. It would help young
sters develop leadership techni
ques and a deeper understanding
of their Jewish heritage and
obligations to their local Jewish
Community. Its members would
develop a loyalty to the Jewish
Community Center and its
philosophy.
Club members from our Cen
ters will have an opportunity to
meet with club members from
all the other centers in the south
Annually there will be a national
conference where members from
all Centers throughout the U.S.A.
and Canada may get together and
share their experience.
The JWB recommendation will
be acted upon at forthcoming
meetings of the Youth Activities
Committee and Board of the
Center.
Although JCY is new to At
lanta, other regions have already
organized regional Jewish Cen
ter Youth Organizations. The
New Jersey Region has been
organized since 1962; the Middle
Atlantic Region organized six
years ago; and the New York
Region organized two years ago.
Under this recommendation all
youth groups affiliated with the
Atlanta Jewish Community Cen
ter would automatically become
eligible members oY JCY (Jew
ish Center Youth). This national
organization is sponsored by the
Jewish Welfare Board, the Na
tional Association of Jewish Com
munity Centers and YM and
YWHAs.
$
The Officers, Board of Directors and staff of the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center extend to the Jewish community of
Atlanta their sincere wishes for a year of Health, Happiness
and Prosperity.
It is their earnest hope that the opening of the Fall Pro
gram of the Center will contribute to the tradition of this
joyful season and bring a greater measure of satisfaction and
enrichment of Jewish living to every home.
