THE IDEAL RABBI
The High Holy Days now ap
proaching have, to me, an inter
esting sidelight. In congregations
all over the country, it will be
the first time many of us hear
the new Rabbi. For all the sol
emn outward appearance we
give, only half our thoughts will
follow the service. The other half
will be busy evaluating the
stranger at the Bimah. Will he

stack up?
Pretty soon there may come
the time when our spiritual
leaders (like all else) will be
screened on computers. There
will probably be an Orthodox or
a Conservative Rabbi Computer
Commission—and also a Reform
Rabbi Computer Board set up.
The purpose: To assist each con
gregational task force find their
“ideal rabbi.” “Tea Leaves” or
Crystal Ball Method gives way
to SCIENCE in capital letters.
Think of it! The rabbinical per
sonal data is fed into a machine
from all existing prospects. Then
electronic statements on what
the congregation wants is fed in.
Maybe the computers will thusly
find the ideal rabbi candidate for
the congregation to be:
1. He is a leader who follows
the dictates of the majority—but
is also courageously adopting the
stand of the minority.
2. He stays home a lot—but is
also available for MC-ing each
and every Hadassah function or
B’nai B’rith Brunch.
3. He’s a gifted speaker whose
sermons stimulate you — but he
never touches on controversial
matters of the laity.
4. He never talks down to the
* people—yet his words bring such
authority that the most learned
of his congregation are awed by
his erudition.
5. He spends a commendable
amount of time cementing ecu
menical relations—but definitely
wouldn’t mix too much with the
goyim.
6. While his salary require
ments are delightfully limited—
he lives in tasteful and luxurious
surroundings compatible with the
standards of the more affluent
members of the congregaton.
7 As a good and skilled ad-
■ ministrator, he tends to his
preaching and leaves the real
running of the place to the sham-
us.

these stereotyped specifications.
The fact that no two rabbis are
ever exactly alike would not be
a factor.
There wouldn’t be a need for
meetings, interviews, selection
arguments and such.
Applications of rabbis could
be simply filed with the near
est designated data processing
service bureau. And the success
ful rabbinical applicant would
“print out”—as they say in dig
ital parlance.
My advice to all would-be ideal
rabbis is summed up in this lit
tle saying of my Great-Uncle Ed.
“If you can’t be an originator—
Better be an imitator
Or you’re liable to end up
no later atall.” cl965
